WATERLOO, Iowa – Day two of the UNI Invitational had Iowa State's four student-athletes competing in the second and third rounds of doubles and singles action.
Maria Fernanda Macedo will play in Sunday's singles championship. Macedo, after a first-round bye, defeated Ashleigh Chiaf of Missouri 6-1, 6-1 in the morning, and continued to advance after UNI's Nina Pfahler defaulted her match. Opposite of Macedo for the championship will be Maddie Soule of Milwaukee.
Ksenia Pronina was edged by Missouri's Jamie Mera in a close three match challenge, but the freshman continued on to defeat Michelle Elkin of South Dakota 6-1, 6-4.
Caroline Hauge Andersen and
Meghan Cassens, the other Iowa State rookies, surrendered their singles matches due to injuries.
“The whole purpose of this trip was to come out here and see how our girls handle adversity,” Espinosa said. “We just need to keep working on the physical aspects of the game and try to stay healthy.”
Pronina and Cassens will represent Iowa State in the doubles championships tomorrow. After ousting UNI's Nina Pfahler and Jessica Kunzelmann 8-4, the duo will challenge Missouri's Jamie Mera and Ashleigh Chiaf for the top spot. Mera and Chiaf defeated Cyclone pair Macedo and Andersen 8-4 today, but Iowa State went on to trump Drake's Nell Boyd and Amanda Argon 8-3.
Matches will conclude Sunday afternoon at Byrnes Park.
