DES MOINES, Iowa - The Iowa State Cyclones used six-run and five-run fourth innings to power to victory over Northern Iowa and Iowa at the Iowa Big Four Classic on Saturday. The Cyclones scored six runs in the fourth against UNI and cruised to a 6-2 win before scoring five runs with two outs in the fourth frame to put away Iowa 9-1 in five innings. The sweep moves the Cyclones to a 3-0 record on the fall season.
Against UNI, Iowa State got a strong six-inning performance from junior Tori Torrescano. Torrescano allowed two runs on five hits while walking one and fanning eight Panther hitters. Torrescano started the game by retiring the first 11 batters before giving up a two-out double in the fourth. She would end the threat with a strikeout to retire the side.
In the bottom half of the fourth the Cyclones exploded for six runs, sending 12 batters to the plate. Freshmen Jorden Smith started the inning off with a leadoff walk. Sophomore Anna Cole then reached on an error by the UNI right fielder when a fly ball. The miscue opened the flood gates for Iowa State as Sara Rice followed with an RBI single to center field and Evan Folks walked to load the bases. Panther sophomore pitcher Jamie Fisher uncorked two wild pitches to score Cole and Madison Tibben, pinch running for Rice, to give the Cyclones a 3-0 lead.
With one out, freshmen Lexi Slater worked a walk in front of infielder Dalyn Varela's sacrifice fly that plated Folks to extend the lead to 4-0. Not finished yet, Erica Miller had a RBI double to right center to score Slater to give Iowa State a 5-0 lead. Torrescano followed Miller's double with a liner to center to score pinch runner Amber Ewert. When the dust settled the Cyclones had score six runs on four hits.
UNI got on the scoreboard in the top of the sixth inning with a leadoff single a two run homer but Torrescano would settle down to retire the side. Freshmen Madison Jones pitched a scoreless seventh to close out the 6-2 victory.
In game two, Iowa State tallied two runs in the second, five in the fourth and added two in the fifth to take the nightcap 9-1 in five innings against the Hawkeyes.
Iowa State opened the scoring in the top of the second inning when Varela singled to center to score Folks and senior Heidi Kidwell who had reached base on a free pass and fielder's choice to take an early 2-0 lead. Iowa answered in the bottom of the second with a solo homer to cut the lead in half 2-1.
The Cyclones would strike again in the fourth with a five-run inning. After the first two outs were recorded Iowa State started a two out rally with a Kidwell single to center and followed with a stolen base. Slater and Varela then drew back to back walks in front of a Miller single to left that scored Kidwell and staked the Cyclones to a 3-1 lead.
Torrescano grew the Cyclone lead to 7-1 when she deposited an 0-1 Chelsea Lyon pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam.
Iowa State closed out the scoring with two runs in the fifth. Rice battled and singled on a 1-2 pitch and Folks belted the next Hawkeye pitch for a two run homer, scoring Kelsey Enslin, pinch running for Rice. Defensively, Iowa State had a one-two-three fifth inning to preserve the run-rule victory.
Senior Lauren Kennewell got the victory as she allowed one run while scattering four hits.
Iowa State returns to action Sunday afternoon at Buel Field to take on Drake. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. CDT.
