WATERLOO, Iowa – Iowa State secured two tournament titles in today's championships at the UNI Invitational.
Maria Fernanda Macedo, the only Iowa State senior to compete at the tournament, took first place in the Platinum Singles bracket. Macedo won the title by taking out Milwaukee's Maddie Soule in straight sets, winning 6-0, 6-2.
“Maria started out really quick,” Espinosa noted. “It was good to see that she was taking care of her match.”
One freshman pair continued to impress at their first-ever collegiate tournament.
Meghan Cassens teamed up with
Ksenia Pronina to oust Missouri pair Jamie Mera and Ashleigh Chiaf in the doubles championship contest. The Cyclone duo won by a score of 8-6.
“We started down, but we started making adjustments and moving the ball around and being more proactive at the net,” Espinosa said of the championship match. “It was good to have them bounce back and win it.”
With two tournaments under their belts, the Cyclones will continue preparation for the ITA Regionals and the Kansas Tournament, both taking place the weekend of Oct. 21.
