AMES, Iowa – Iowa State claimed six champions Saturday at the Bill Bergan Invitational in the Lied Recreation Center. Minnesota won the men's team competition with 96 points. Iowa State finished fourth with 71 points. Wisconsin won the women's competition with 107 points. Iowa State finished tied for third with 66 team points.
All in all, it was a good day with national caliber performances by the Cyclones.
Cyclone All-Americans Betsy Saina and Dani Stack both qualified for the NCAA indoor Championships in the 3,000-meter run. Saina won the event with Stack and teammate Megan Nelson finishing second and third respectively. Saina's time of 9:06.61 currently ranks as the fastest clocking nationally and second on the Iowa State All-Time Performers list. Stack's time, 9:08.00, currently ranks third nationally and on the Iowa State All-Time Performers list.
"Before the race, we talked among us and decided on a steady pace," Saina said. "If I felt really good with two laps to go, I was going to break away. I'm feeling very good after this."
Stack wasn't necessarily concentrating on the national qualifying mark of 9:10.
"I was more interested in a consistent pace," Stack said. I wanted to be under control and run under 9:20."
Iowa State senior Ian Warner took home two event titles, running personal best times in the 60-meter dash (6.70) and the 200-meter dash (21.47). Both were personal bests.
"It seems that 6.6 is teasing me," Warner said. "I just have to be patient and it will come."
The Cyclones also captured the event title in the men's 3,000 as Rico Loy posted a personal best time of 8:07.69.
"This race was to tell me what kind of shape I am in," Loy said. "I am feeling good and just need some more workouts to get ready for the Big 12 meet."
Iowa State senior Kianna Elahi broke the Bill Bergan Invitational meet record in the 400-meter dash, posting a personal best time of 54.62. Elahi has broken a meet record in each of the Cyclones' three meets this season.
"When I first came here as a freshman, I didn't know what to expect," Elahi said. "I felt in the dark. Now I have confidence and I also have really good training partners."
Akeem Holmes highlighted competition for the Cyclones in the field events. Holmes earned a first-place finish in the triple jump with a mark of 49-09.25.
"I feel that we picked up where we left off last year," Holmes said. "We have good leadership on this team and I am concentrating now on the rest of the indoor season."
Iowa State head coach Corey Ihmels said the team has had a good week.
"I felt on Tuesday that we were having a great workout when we were training all together again," Ihmels said. "Good practices lead to good meets and that makes you excited about the near future.'
The Cyclones hit the road next weekend as they travel to New York City for the New Balance Invitational.
