AMES, Iowa - The names on the Cyclones' softball lineup card will look familiar this year as the team returns all of its position players from the 2011 squad including Heidi Kidwell, Erica Miller, Tori Torrescano and Dalyn Varela who combined for a .314 batting average and 30 home runs a year ago. Miller and Torrescano each tied the Iowa State record for home runs in a season with 11 homers each.
"The biggest thing for those four is they take care of their jobs," head Cyclones coach Stacy Gemeinhardt-Cesler said. "Heidi does a great job of getting on base, Dalyn is our most consistent hitter and Tori and Erica, back-to-back [in the batting order], are really hard because if you don't give one of them good pitches to hit, you have to give the other one [good pitches to hit] and they do a great job of complementing each other."
Others who contributed at the plate last season include sophomores Anna Cole and Sara Davison. Among players with at least 10 at bats with two outs, Cole proved clutch, finishing second on the team hitting .321 and advancing the runners 40 percent (19-for-47) of the time. Davison, who started all 49 games for the Cyclones as a freshman, led the team with 24 walks on the season, the second-most in school history. Davison was instrumental in the Cyclones' scoring in 2011, hitting above .300 with runners on base (.340) and runners in scoring position (.313). She also led the team in advancing runners, doing so 61 percent (40-of-66) of the time.
Joining the Cyclones in 2012 are eight new position players and freshmen Lexi Slater and Jorden Smith look to have an immediate impact for Iowa State. Slater, a native of Ramona, Calif. was named an ESPN-Rise All-State selection last year and Smith, from San Antonio, Texas hit .516 as a senior at Johnson High School.
The Iowa State softball season opens Feb. 11-12 at the Ramada UNI-Dome Classic in Cedar Falls. The Cyclones will face Valparaiso, Wisconsin-Green Bay and Western Illinois in the tournament and tickets are available now at unipanthers.com.
