AMES, Iowa - The Iowa State tennis team will divide the squad to appear in two tournaments this weekend. The team will send two student-athletes to the ITA Regional Championships in Tulsa, Okla. and a group of four players will compete at the Jayhawk Invitational in Lawrence, Kan.
While their teammates compete in Lawrence, Kesnia Pronina and Simona Cacciuttolo will represent Iowa State in singles and as a pair at the ITA Regionals Championships. Cacciuttolo will return for her second appearance at the tournament in Tulsa, Okla., and Pronina will make her debut. Iowa State head coach Armando Espinosa said that he is pleased with how the senior and sophomore pair has been preparing and performing.
"I think Simona and Ksenia are playing very well right now," he said. "They should be good to go."
In Kansas, the four Cyclones will compete at the Jayhawk Tennis Center starting on Friday afternoon. Espinosa is optimistic for the weekend, and noted that Jenna Langhorst, Ellie Nixon, Emma Waites and Meghan Cassens are looking forward to having some fresh competition.
"Ellie, Emma and Jenna have learned from what we did at Drake and this will be Meghan's first time out," he said. "I think they're ready to go out there and compete. We've had almost a month and a half playing against each other, so it's time to get some other competition going."
Espinosa noted that full team practices have been cruising along well, and that the student-athletes' eagerness to compete has translated into their play.
"Everyone's playing very well so I'm comfortable playing them in all different spots," he said. "It's been a good year. Practice has been great, and so far we've had a lot of fun."
The ITA Regionals will begin Thursday and action at KU will kick off Friday afternoon.
