AMES, Iowa - The Cyclones (2-6, 0-0 Big 12) will travel to Cathedral City, Calif. this weekend to play five games as part of the Cathedral City Classic, hosted by Oregon State. The Cyclones will play Fresno State, Oregon State, Colorado State, Pacific and San Diego State Feb. 23-25.
Freshman Jordan Smith carries a two-game hitting streak into Thursday's game with Fresno State. The San Antonio, Texas native has three extra base hits for Iowa State this season, including the teams only triple.
Ramona, Calif. Lexi Slater returns to her home state leading the Cyclones with a .368 batting average. Slater ran up a four -game hitting streak which ended Saturday against reigning national champion Arizona State. Other Cyclones returning to their home state of California this weekend are Madison Jones (San Diego), Erica Miller (Pomona), Dalyn Varela (Wildomar), Breeanna Holliday (Millbrae) and Tori Torrescano (San Diego).
Thursday's first game, against the Bulldogs, is set for 12:30 p.m. CST followed by Oregon State at 5 p.m. On Friday, Iowa State will play Colorado State and Pacific at noon and 3 p.m., respectively and close out the weekend on Saturday against San Diego State at noon.
Cyclone Notebook
- Iowa State will head west this week, traveling to Cathedral City, Calif. to play Fresno State, Oregon State, Colorado State, Pacific and San Diego State, Feb. 23-25.
- The weekend's first contest is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. CST against Fresno State on Thursday.
- The Cyclones will try to break a five game skid against the Bulldogs who are 7-2 this season.
- Freshmen Lexi Slater and Jorden Smith are getting hot on offense early this year. Slater leads the team with a .368 batting average and took a four-game hitting streak into Saturday's game with Arizona State. Smith has three extra base hits this season including the team's only triple and will carry a two-game hit streak into Thursday's contests.
- Junior Tori Torrescano is tops for the Cyclones with six RBIs and a .810 slugging percentage.
- Torrescano is one of six Big 12 players slugging over .800 through the first two weekends of play.
- Torrescano can be counted on in clutch situations, going 4-for-8 with two outs and driving in five runs in two-out at bats.
- Sophomore outfielder Anna Cole leads the Cyclones hitting .429 (3-of-7) with runners and is 2-for-3 with runners in scoring position.
- Cole also has the longest hitting streak of the early season with five games (Valparaiso-Illinois State)
- Cole's three doubles this year trail only Kansas' Maggie Hull who has five doubles through nine games for the Jayhawks.
- Dalyn Varela is the only Cyclone who has not bounced around in the lineup yet in 2012. The third baseman has hit in the three-whole in all eight games.
- In the pitching circle, Torrescano is the only Cyclone to keep inherited runners from scoring, stranding four of her six inherited runners.
- The Cyclone pitchers set records on Saturday against Iowa giving up 29 hits, 24 runs and 21 earned runs to the Hawkeyes. Iowa is the only team to ever reach 20 hits, runs or earned runs against Iowa State.
- Six players have made at least two starts in the Cyclones' eight games this season. Torrescano and freshman Miranda Kemp lead the team in starts with three each while Torrescano (6) edges Kemp (5) and Breeanna Holliday (5) for appearances.
Getting to Know Fresno State
- Iowa State is 1-3 all-time against the Bulldogs.
- The teams last met in 2009 when No. 12 Fresno State won a tight 1-0 game at the Mayfair Tournament in Long Beach, Calif.)
- Fresno State is 7-2 this season, losing only to Sacramento State and Long Beach State.
- The Bulldog pitching staff has been stingy against batters, compiling a 0.80 ERA through nine games with none of three-deep staff with an individual ERA of over 0.90.
- Michelle Moses has already thrown 36 innings, giving up 17 hits and four earned runs with 41 strikeouts.
- On offense, Andrea Ortega and Kaitlin Griffin lead the starters with .348 batting averages. Griffin is also tops on the team with 10 RBIs.

Getting to Know Oregon State
- The Cyclones and Beavers met for the only time in 2003, where Oregon State won, 10-2.
- Oregon State is 7-3 this year with losses Georgia Tech, McNeese State and San Diego State.
- Three of OSU's starters are hitting over .350 in the young season: Desiree Beltran (.385), Dani Gilmore (.375) and Hannah Bouska (.353).
- Elizabeth Santana and Lea Cavestany each lead the squad with 10 RBIs.
- Both Gilmore and Bouska have been selective but effective on the base paths, each player swiping all three of the bases they've attempted to steal.
- Marina Demore and Tina Andreana have each started five games in the circle for the Beavers. Demore had a 3-1 record and a 1.67 ERA while Andreana has struggled, going 1-2 with a 5.08 ERA.
- Reliever Paige Hall has been effective in her 13 innings of work. Hall has a 3-0 record and given up 12 hits and five earned runs for a 2.69 ERA.
Getting to Know Colorado State
- Iowa State and Colorado State are tied 2-2 all-time.
- When the squads met in for a doubleheader in 2007, Iowa State took game one, 6-1, before falling, 0-4 in game two.
- The six starters for the Rams have an 8.71 ERA this season as the Rams have gone 3-7 through 10 games.
- Colorado State has lost to Texas twice and to former Big 12 member Nebraska.
- With averages of .343 batting averages, Lyssa Roberts and Ashlie Ortega lead the Ram offense.
- Shae Rodriguez is the only player with double-digit RBIs this season with 10.
- Emily Pohl is the most patient batter for CSU, walking 12 times.
- Kelli Eubanks is the Rams' go-to starter, getting the ball to begin the game on four occasions this season. Eubanks is 1-3 with an ERA of .585 and two complete games thrown.
- Kailey Snyder has appeared five times for CSU, compiling a 7.36 ERA and a 1-0 record in 14.2 innings.
- Kacie McCarthy (5.40 ERA) and Molly Randle (16.36 ERA have each appeared four times.
Getting to Know Pacific
- The Cyclones lone meeting with the Tigers was during the 1989 season. Iowa State came away with the 8-4 victory.
- Pacific is 2-5 this season with wins over Nevada and Bradley and suffering losses against such teams as Stanford, UCLA and Kentucky.
- Nikki Armagost and Tori Shepard have each started three games for the Tigers. Armagost leads the pitching staff with a 1.56 ERA, giving up four earned runs in 18 innings. Shepard has a 4.52 ERA and has struck out a team-high 15 batters. Both players hold 1-2 records.
- Armagost is the Tigers' top offensive threat, hitting .409 through seven games and hitting three doubles.
- Both Kelsey Rodriguez and Nicole Matson have driving in four runs for Pacific.
Getting to Know San Diego State
- San Diego State leads the all-time series 6-4.
- The teams met at San Diego State in 2009 and went to extra innings before the Aztecs held on for the 4-3 win in the 10th.
- The Aztecs are 7-4 this season with losses to Texas Tech, Tennessee, Oregon and UCLA.
- Lorena Klopp and Hayley Miles have shown pop early on for SDSU with five and four homers, respectively.
- Miles (.441) and Kristin May (.476) are both hitting over .400 heading into the weekend's games.
