Cyclones Edged By Western Michigan, 4-3

KALAMAZOO, Mich. - Western Michigan's Jill Pastunink was able to hold off a comeback attempt by Iowa State's Simona Cacciuttolo as the Broncos held on to defeat the Cyclones, 4-3, Friday evening. With the loss, Iowa State drops to 0-2 this season, while Western Michigan improves to 3-2.

With the teams deadlocked at 3-3, Cacciuttolo bounced back after dropping the first set to even her bout with Pastunink at 1-1. Pastunink proved too much in the end, winning the third set 6-3 to seal the victory for the Broncos.

Western Michigan opened the match by capturing the doubles point with wins at No. 1 and No. 2 to offset the Cyclone duo of Tessa Lang and Marie Chartier's 8-7 win over Pastunink and Maria Nivia.

In singles action, Chartier quickly tied the match up at 1-1 with a straight-set, 6-1, 6-1, victory over the Broncos' Rachel Denny at No. 6 singles.

The match would see-saw back-and-forth as Western Michigan went ahead with Maria Nivia's 6-1, 6-4 win over Tessa Lang at No. 4 singles. The Cyclones captured the point at No. 5 singles with freshman Meghan Cassens defeating Kathleen Hawkins, 6-2, 6-1.

Senior Maria Macedo then dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision at No. 1 singles to Nini Sujashvii before another Cyclone rookie, Ksenia Pronina, evened the score at 3-3 with a victory at No. 2 singles over WMU's Maggie Remynse.

The Cyclones will be back in action Saturday at noon against Marquette.
