Cyclone Notebook
- Iowa State hosts mid-week games against UNI and Drake this week before flying south to Lubbock, Texas to play three games at Texas Tech.
- With three losses against No. 6 Texas last weekend, the Cyclones start the conference season 0-3 for the first time since 2007.
- Iowa State's 8-4 loss to the Longhorns on Friday is the only loss of the season for the Cyclones when scoring first. Iowa State took a 2-0 lead over Texas in the fourth inning on Friday.
- Hitting with two outs has been a strength of Iowa State's this season as the team entered the Texas series hitting .267 with two outs. Against the stalwart pitching of Texas, Iowa State hit just .167 with one out remaining in any given frame.
- Entering the weekend, Iowa State had driven in 51 two-out runs but managed only four two-out RBIs against the Longhorns, who posted 13 such RBIs.
- Although Iowa State was more successful in hitting with runners in scoring position than Texas, .389-.343, it was the Cyclones' .158 average with the bases empty that sank them, as Texas hit .450 with no runners, giving them more opportunities (35-18) to drive in runners in scoring position.
- Pinch hitting continues to be a challenge for Iowa State in 2012. Last season the team finished with a 1-for-26 pinch hitting mark and this season, Anna Cole is the only Cyclone with a pinch hit in Iowa State's 14 pinch hit at-bats.
- Erica Miller hit Iowa State's only home run of the weekend series, tying her (again) with teammate Tori Torrescano with 22 career dingers. The duo sits third all-time at Iowa State for home runs.
- While Iowa State's only home run came off Miller, the Longhorns went deep eight times over the weekend with two home runs in Friday's game and three each in Saturday and Sunday's contests.
- Opponents have hit multiple home runs off Iowa State in 11 games this season and the Cyclones have given up three or four home runs in seven games.
- Walks were hard to come by against the Longhorns as Iowa State drew just five bases-on-balls, two from Torrescano.
- Freshman Madison Jones had her best outing of the season on Saturday, pitching 4.1 scoreless innings in relief, walking two and striking out two.
- Jones' Saturday outing was the only appearance by a Cyclone pitcher that did not result in at least two runs for Texas.
- Amber Ewert and Dalyn Varela were the only Cyclones to hit in all three games over the weekend.
- Ewert led the Cyclones against Texas, going 5-for-10 at the plate and slugging .600. The sophomore transfer takes a five game hitting streak into Tuesday's game with the Panthers.
- Three of Ewert's hits came in her 3-for-3 performance on Saturday. Ewert was also hit by a pitch during the game.
- In six leadoff at-bats against Texas, Ewert hit .667 (4-for-6), bringing her season average in the leadoff position to .556 (10-for-18).
