EL PASO, Texas - Erica Miller, Lexi Slater and Tori Torrescano each hit two home runs Sunday as Iowa State (6-11, 0-0 Big 12) routed Brown (1-3, 0-0 Ivy League), 17-3, in five innings on Sunday at the UTEP Invitational. Slater tied the Iowa State single-game RBI record, driving in six runs against the Bears.
The six home run explosion broke the Iowa State school record and marked the first time that three players have hit multiple home runs in the same game. Miller and Torrescano each hit two home runs last season against Northern Iowa in Ames.
With their two home runs on Sunday, Miller and Torrescano both move into third place all-time at Iowa State with 21 home runs each. Torrescano doubled her RBI total for the season in the four-game stretch, giving her a team-high 20 RBIs for the year and with her two solo home runs on Sunday, Miller ups her career RBI total to 71, breaking into the Cyclone top-10, currently tied for eighth in program history.
In addition to Slater's record-tying six RBIs, Torrescano drove in four runs, Miller, Amber Ewert and Amandine Habben each added two RBIs and Jorden Smith drove in a run as the Cyclones broke the single-game RBI record with 17 RBIs in the game.
Slater, who hit three home runs during the Texas trip, smashed the first grand slam of her Cyclone career in the second inning, followed by Torrescano's two-run bomb that chased starting pitcher Denise van der Goot (0-2) from the circle. Van der Goot faced 13 batters through 1.2 innings, giving up six hits, seven runs, walking two and striking out one.
The first batter reliever Jessica Cherness faced was Miller, who capped the eight-run inning with a solo shot to center field.
Brown came back strong in the top of the fourth as Torrescano (5-6) gave up three-straight hits to the Bears, capped by Kat Strobel's three-run blast to left field to cut the Cyclones' lead to 8-3. In her third complete game of the season, Torrescano allowed three runs on six hits with one walk and two strikeouts.
Iowa State scored another big inning in the fourth as the trio of Slater, Torrescano and Miller bashed their second home runs of the day including the second back-to-back home runs from Torrescano and Miller, batting in the fourth and fifth spots, respectively.
Next weekend, the Cyclones are in Springfield, Mo. for three games at Missouri State. The weekend slate begins Saturday March 10 with the first game of a doubleheader scheduled for noon CST.
