DES MOINES, Iowa - The beginning of a new Drake Relays was something new to several Iowa State athletes who made a difference for the Cyclones on the first day of the 103rd edition of America's Athletic Classic.
The Iowa State 4x1600-meter relay team consisting of four Cyclones who had never run the race before Thursday ran to a third-place finish in front of an enthusiastic crowd. The team of Ejiro Okoro, Katy Moen, Morgan Casey and Maggie Gannon compiled a time of 19:35.14, the second-best effort in the event on the Iowa State Outdoor Track and Field All-Time Performance List. In the final 1,600-meters, though, the Cyclones were edged out by Iowa, which won the race for the first time in Drake Relays history, and Minnesota.
Okoro held the Cyclones in third through the first leg of the relay, while Moen pushed the Cyclones into a second-place position at the second exchange. Through the third mile, Casey pushed the Cyclones further to hold part of the race's lead into the final exchange. Gannon, as Iowa State's anchor posted a 4:57 split to finish comfortably in third place. All four members of the Iowa State relay team ran sub-five minute splits.
"I was probably about six steps back from the two girls who were leading when I got the baton," Gannon said. "They're two of the best runners in the country so I just tried my best to close the gap between them and myself. Other than that, I just really tried to run my own race."
Not only was it Okoro's first time running the 4x1600-meter relay, as an international student-athlete, it was also her first time competing at the Drake Relays.
"My experience at the Drake Relays has been great so far," Okoro said. "I've never been to a meet with this type of atmosphere before. From what I have seen so far, it seems like it's going to be a really fun and competitive meet."
Iowa State's Taylor Sanderson, competing unattached, placed sixth in the decathlon.
The Drake Relays continue tomorrow for Iowa State with its first event scheduled to be the preliminary round of the women's 4x100-meter relay at 9:30 a.m.
