Cyclones Look For Season Sweep Of Bulldogs

AMES, Iowa - Iowa State (12-24, 1-8 Big 12) is coming off a 2-1 win over No. 14 Texas A&M last Saturday and is looking for a season sweep of Drake (16-19, 8-4 MVC) on Tuesday afternoon at Ron Buel Field. The Cyclones swept the season series with Drake last season.
Junior Tori Torrescano's three-hit gem in the circle against the Aggies was helped on offense by two RBIs from sophomore designated hitter Sara Rice who collected her second multi-RBI game of the season with a bases-loaded walk in the first inning and a double in the fifth.
Sara Davison and Dalyn Varela, who each had a hit in the Cyclones' weekend win, have been heating up at the plate over the last few weeks. Before Big 12 play kicked off against Texas on March 23, Varela was hitting .211 on the year, but since the Texas series, Varela is hitting .344 with 11 hits, just one hit shy of her total before March 23.
Davison, who entered the Cyclones' series at Texas Tech hitting .191, is clobbering opponents for a .389 average since March 29.
Iowa State and Drake met earlier this season in Ames, where sophomore Taylor Smith (3-2) threw a complete-game shutout of the Bulldogs and the Cyclones took the 1-0 victory behind an RBI-double from Erica Miller. Since falling to the Cyclones, the Bulldogs are 3-4 and on a three-game skid after being swept by Northern Iowa over the weekend.
Tuesday's game is scheduled for 4 p.m.
Cyclone Notebook
- Iowa State heads south on I-35 on Tuesday for a game at Drake. The Cyclones defeated the Bulldogs, 1-0, on March 28 in Ames.
- On Saturday, the Cyclone beat No. 14 Texas A&M 2-1 for the programs first win over a top-15 team since winning, 4-3, at No. 10 Missouri in 2009.
- The last time Iowa State bested a top-15 team at home was against then-No. 15 Texas A&M in 2006. The Cyclones won that game 14-6.
- With their 2-1 win on Saturday, the Cyclones are 5-1 in one-run games this season.
- The win was the fourth of the season in which Iowa State did not hit a home run.
- Iowa State improved to 7-3 when scoring in the first inning and to 10-1 when scoring first.
- With her home run in the second game of Friday's doubleheader, Erica Miller drew even once again with teammate Tori Torrescano with 24 career home runs.
- Friday's game two marks the ninth time this season Miller and Torrescano have hit home runs within two games of each other (see page 3 for full breakdown).
- Both Miller and senior Dalyn Varela have hit safely in 8-of-9 conference games this season. Miller has three multi-hit games in league play, Varela has one.
- Varela has begun to heat up at the plate since the beginning of Big 12 play, hitting .333 against conference foes, second on the team to Millers .393.
- In non-conference action Varela is hitting .226 but since March 23, Varela is hitting a combined .344 between conference and non-conference games.
- Second baseman Sara Davison has also found her swing, hitting .191 entering Iowa State's series at Texas Tech and blowing up to a .389 average since to bring her season average to .233, fourth-best on the team among regular starters.
- All 10 of Torrescano's homers this season have come against non-conference opponents, against whom she is hitting .373 with 10 home runs, 30 RBIs and slugging .853.
- Nine Cyclones have led off for Iowa State more than 18 times this season and boast averages of over .420 in those situations. The team is led by Sara Davison who is hitting .619 as the leadoff (13-for-21).
- In the Cyclones' last 10 games, Miller is hitting .367 with 11 hits, two home runs, seven RBIs and a .600 slugging mark.
- Close behind in average is Varela with a .360 batting mark, nine hits, two walks and a stolen base, the second of her career.
- The first four innings have become a results indicator for the Cyclones in 2012. The squad is 9-1 when leading after four but 0-22 when trailing after the first 24 outs have been recorded.

Revisiting Drake
- Since falling 1-0 to the Cyclones in Ames on March 28, the Bulldogs are 3-4, bringing them to 16-19 on the year and 8-4 in the Missouri Valley.
- Iowa State sophomore Taylor Smith picked up the complete game shutout against Drake.
- Erica Miller had an RBI-double in the bottom of the fourth inning for the game's only run.
- Drake is hitting .238 this season, led by Hayley Nybo's .303 batting average.
- The Bulldogs have used their speed to swipe 70 bases through 35 games. Three Bulldogs have more than 14 steals on the year: Macie Silliman (17), Lindsey Vande Wall (17) and Amy Pierce (14).
- Jordan Gronewold has a 12-13 record and a 2.42 ERA heading into Tuesday's contest. Gronewold has thrown 153 innings this season and recorded 138 strikeouts.

All of Miller's home runs this season have come in close proximity to Torrescano's home runs and Torrescano has hit three home runs (two against SDSU) that have not coincided with a Miller home run.
