AMES, Iowa – Iowa State (6-3, 0-0 Big 12) is back on the road again this weekend at the Carolina Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C., Feb. 23-24. The Cyclones will play teams from North Carolina, George Washington, Iona and Penn State.
During the four-game weekend, the Cyclones will face first-time opponents in George Washington and Iona while also re-familiarizing themselves with the Tar Heels and Nittany Lions, both teams Iowa State has not seen since 1997.
Senior
Erica Miller will lead the Iowa State offense into the weekend with a .481 batting average and 11 RBI on the season. Miller is blistering pitchers for a .571 average with runners in scoring position and is a perfect 4-for-4 with the bases loaded.
Pitcher and infielder
Tori Torrescano, hit her 29th career home run last weekend against Boise State while improving her pitching record to 4-1. The San Diego, Calif. native leads the team in walks with seven and counts six RBI on the season.
Torrescano's ability to work a walk may come in handy against George Washington, whose Meghan Rico has walked 16 batters in the Colonials first six games but is allowing opponents just .167 hitting. Rico also has hit four batters. As for their own offense, the Colonials have mustered just five extra-base hits and no homeruns entering the weekend.
North Carolina, who is receiving votes this week, is 7-5 for the year and includes two losses to No. 10 Texas A&M, both by two runs or fewer, on its résumé. The Tar Heels had nine hits in their second loss to the Aggies but have not tallied a single walk in either of their last two contests. In the circle for the last two games, pitcher Lori Spingola has given up 11 hits, five earned runs, two walks and fanned 19 batters.
Katie Jansson's five RBI lead Iona into the weekend tournament. Her four hits is tied with three other teammates for most on the team. Through five games in which the Gaels are 1-4, hurler Carly Argyle has allowed 12 earned runs, 20 hits and six walks while collecting 15 strikeouts.
The Cyclones will be the second Big 12 team faced by Penn State, who lost to Texas Tech last weekend. Cassidy Bell and Alyssa Renwick pace the Nittany Lions with nine RBI apiece in the early season and are a combined 7-for-7 in stolen bases. Bell has two doubles and three homeruns for the 2-3 squad and is slugging 1.333.
Iowa State's weekend begins on Saturday at 8:30 a.m. CST against George Washington, followed by UNC at 1:30 p.m.
Cyclone Notebook
• Avoiding the snow in Ames this weekend, Iowa State is traveling East to the Carolina Classic, hosted by North Carolina. The Cyclones will play teams from George Washington, Iona and Penn State in addition to the hosting Tar Heels.
• Two of this weekend's foes (George Washington and Iona) are new to the Cyclones while the others (UNC and Penn State) have not appeared on Iowa State's schedule since 1997.
• The Cyclones went 2-2 last weekend at the UTSA Classic, including a come-from-behind win over Boise State.
• The Cyclones are 6-0 this season when leading or tied after four innings but are 0-3 when trailing at the same point.
• Miller posted four hits against Boise State, tying a single game career-high.
• Still with the hottest bat on the squad, Miller hit .538 over the weekend, bringing her nine-game average to .481.
• The Pomona, Calif. native is hitting .571 with runners in scoring position and is a perfect 4-for-4 with the bases loaded. She has four two-out RBI this season.
• In 20 combined at-bats with the bases full, the Cyclones are hitting .650 as a team, led by Miller. Spendlove is the only other player with four bases-loaded ABs, picking up two hits.
• Of Iowa State's 22 runs scored last weekend, 11 were with two outs.
• Miller and Spendlove are tops on the team with 11 RBI each this season, followed closely by Davisons' 10.
• Davison has never posted more than 12 RBI in a season before, totaling 12 in 2012.

Sarah Hawryluk is currently on a seven-game hitting streak and had seven hits last weekend, along with Miller, to lead Iowa State.
Big 12 Notes and Rankings
• Iowa State is third in offense through two weekends with an overall batting average of .348, trailing Kansas (.369) and Texas (.350).
• The Cyclones are also third in fielding, with a percentage of .976.
• Hawryluk is one of three Big 12 players with more than 15 hits this season, boasting 16 hits through nine games with Iowa State.
• She also leads the league with two triples, along with Baylor's Kaitlyn Thumann. Eight other players each have one triple this season.
• Although she did not attempt a steal last weekend, freshman
Brittany Gomez still ranks third in the league with seven thefts on the year.

Sara Davison's four doubles is one off the league leading five for the early season and she cracks the top-10 in slugging with a percentage of .720 (10th).
• Hawryluk is one of 10 players in the Big 12 with at least 20 total bases. The Alberta, Canada native counts 21 total bases this season.
• Miller's .576 on base percentage is fourth-best in the conference.
Scouting George Washington
• Iowa State and George Washington will meet for the first time on Saturday.
• After winning their season-opener, 8-0, over Seton Hall, the Colonials are 0-5, most recently falling to USC Upstate and Samford last weekend.
• Freshman Carlee Gray is coming up big for the 1-5 Colonials this year, hitting .357 and tied for the lead on the team with five hits for the season. Junior Chelsea Lenhart also has five hits.
• Sophomore Victoria Valos leads the Colonials with four RBI.
• As a team, George Washington has combined for five extra-base hits and no home runs.
• Pitcher Meghan Rico is 1-3 this season with a 3.23 ERA but has held opponents to a .167 average. Rico's weakness has come in her 16 walks issued thus-far. She has also hit four batters.
• GWU is not prone to giving up homeruns, allowing just two in its first six games.
Scouting North Carolina
• Iowa State is 3-0 against the Tar Heels, whom it last played in 1997.
• UNC is 7-5 this season, two of its losses coming to No. 10 Texas A&M last weekend.
• In their last loss to TAMU, the Tar Heels had nine hits; senior Elisha Elliott drove in UNC's lone run.
• North Carolina batters have not worked a walk in their last two games.
• Hurler Lori Spingola is 4-3 this season, combing for 13 innings and two complete games in the Tar Heels' last two game. The junior has given up 11 hits, five earned runs, walked two and struck out 19 in the two-game span.
Scouting Iona
• The Cyclones and Gaels have never met before this season.
• Iona is 1-4 with two losses each to Nebraska-Omaha and UNC-Wilmington. Its lone win came against Detroit in the first game of the season.
• Katie Jansson leads the team with five RBI on the season. She has four hits, tied with three other Gaels for the team-high.
• Pitcher Carly Argyle has thrown 17.2 innings, giving up 20 hits, 12 earned runs and six walks while striking out 15.
Scouting Penn State
• Although Iowa State and Penn State have met six times in their histories, the teams have not played since 1997. Iowa State leads the all-time series, 4-2.
• Penn State enters the weekend 2-3, most recently losing to Texas Tech and defeating UMKC.
• Senior Cassidy Bell leads the Nittany Lion offense with nine hits, including two doubles and three homeruns, nine RBI and a slugging percentage of 1.333.
• Alyssa Renwick also has nine RBI on the year.
• The duo are a combined 7-for-7 in steals as well.
• Opponents are hitting .356 against the Nittany Lion pitching staff which holds a 9.27 ERA.
• Macy Jones is 2-1 in her four appearances this season, giving up three doubles, four homeruns and allowing hitters a .305 average against her.
• Christy Von Pusch has appeared in two games, hitting 10 batters and walking 16.
