AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team will head to Houston Friday to finish the fall season at the Jason's Deli Collegiate Invitational.
The team looks to improve from their last contest at ITA Regionals in Stillwater, Oklahoma, where junior Ana Gasparovic and senior Ksenia Pronina competed in singles.
“I thought Ana did really well and I thought we were a little bit better prepared than what we showed,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “That tournament always is really a struggle because it's one and done. It's one of those things that is just disappointing that the luck of the draw can make it or break it.”
The two were joined by senior Meghan Cassens and sophomore Samantha Budai. Gasparovic and Cassens paired up, along with Pronina and Budai, to earn automatic doubles bids. Both pairs made it to the second round of play.
“I was happy with doubles, I feel like we're still getting better in doubles,” Espinosa said. “In singles we could do a little better, so hopefully in Houston, we do a little better.”
Espinosa has high hopes for this weekend as a positive end to his team's fall tournament season.
“This is kind of the pinnacle of the fall season,” Espinosa said. “We started practice in September, so close to two months ago. It should be the tournament where we can see how good we've gotten and the developments that we've accomplished through the fall.”
The team also hopes to see results of extra efforts on a fitness standpoint as well as court strategies.
“We should not only [be able] to see the game from the court but to see the game from the fitness level,” Espinosa said. “This should be where we peak. The kids have really worked hard trying to get better at understanding the strategies and things like that. I feel like this is the tournament where we can get some results.”
This weekend's tournament will be a pool play set up, giving most of the team a chance to get in and compete against others at their competition level in an effort to prepare the team for spring contest.
“I think this is kind of going to help us solidify where we are [as a team,]” Espinosa said. “We're going to move people around. We're preparing for the worst so that if we have any injuries or anything like that, we are prepared for it.”
The Cyclones will begin play Friday at 9 a.m. Three doubles pairs will kick off the weekend, taking on duos from Syracuse.
