IRVING, Texas - Iowa State freshman center
Bryanna Fernstrom earned the season's first Big 12 Freshman of the Week award, the league announced Monday.
In her first career start, Fernstrom netted 25 points in just 24 minutes to lead Iowa State to a 98-76 win over USC Upstate. Fernstrom started things off by scoring 12 of Iowa State's first 14 points in just 3 minutes 35 seconds.
The Center City, Minnesota native, broke the Iowa State freshman record for most points in a career debut, which was set by
Anna Prins in 2009. Fernstrom shot 50 percent from the field off 8-of-16 shooting. The 6-5 center also went a perfect 2-of-2 from deep and 7-of-7 from the free throw line. Her 25 points is just the second-highest output of any Big 12 player this week.
Iowa State returns to the court to face Drake on Tues., Nov. 18 at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum.
