Cyclones See Success on Day One at Gopher Invite

MINNEAPOLIS- The Iowa State tennis team kicked off the fall season Friday in Minneapolis at the Gopher Invitational. The Cyclones were among 13 teams competing in singles and doubles play, including Northern Iowa, Drake, Northern Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Milwaukee, South Dakota, South Dakota State, North Dakota, Eastern Michigan, Kentucky, and Minnesota.
MINNEAPOLIS- The Iowa State tennis team kicked off the fall season Friday in Minneapolis at the Gopher Invitational. The Cyclones were among 13 teams competing in singles and doubles play, including Northern Iowa, Drake, Northern Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin, Milwaukee, South Dakota, South Dakota State, North Dakota, Eastern Michigan, Kentucky, and Minnesota.
Tournament play started with three rounds of doubles, with four Cyclone pairs earning wins on day one. Senior Meghan Cassens and junior Ana Gasparovic finished in second place in Gopher flight, taking down pairs from UNI and Minnesota before an 8-6 loss to Drake's Nell Boyd and Maddie Johnson.
Senior Caroline Andersen paired up with sophomore Natalie Phippen for a third-place finish, coming back to win 8-3 over South Dakota's pair of Pavlovic and Barudzic after a loss in the semifinal round of the Minneapolis flight.
Senior Ksenia Pronina and junior Alejandra Galvis earned a fourth-place finish while sophomores Talisa Merchiers and Samantha Budai finished in fifth place in their flight.
In the first round of singles play, Pronina defeated Milwaukee's Alysa Straub, 6-4, 6-0, in the Minnesota flight. Andersen took down Northern Illinois' Stephanie McDonald, 6-4, 7-5 and newcomer Galvis earned a win over North Dakota's Lacey Sprinkel, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0(7).
Cassens also earned a singles win over Minnesota's Julia Courter. She was up 4-0 when Courter retired from the match.
Play will continue Saturday at the Baseline Tennis Center at 9 a.m. with new doubles draws.
