Five Cyclones Notch Personal Records To Open 2015

LINCOLN, Neb. - The Iowa State track and field teams opened the 2015 competition season today at the Holiday Inn Invitational, as five Cyclone student-athletes posted career bests in their respective events.

Anna Holtermann was the first Cyclone to outperform her PR, competing in the weight throw. Holtermann tossed the weight a distance of 51 feet, 10 inches en route to a third-place overall finish. On the men's side of the event, Henry Kelley took third, scoring a distance of 57 feet.

Three ISU milers (two men, one woman) clocked career marks on the day in Matthew Whitlatch, Jason Thomas and Julie Wiemerslage. Whitlatch and Thomas finished first and second, posting times of 4:16.42 and 4:20.46, respectively. Wiemerslage finished runner-up in the women's race, crossing the line in 5:05.63.

In the men's 1000m, Brian Biekert took second with a time of 2:28.81, as Brian Llamas finished fourth with a lifetime-best 2:31.47.

Two Cyclone middle-distance women finished among the top-five individuals in the 800-meter run in Kate DeSimone and Maryn Lowry. DeSimone took third in the race with a time of 2:15.66, with Lowry close on her heels in fourth in 2:16.46.

Iowa State will return to competition tomorrow morning at Nebraska's Bob Devaney Sports Center for Day 2 of the Holiday Inn Invitational. Action is slated to begin at 11:00 a.m. CT.
