ISU Tennis Finishes Day One at FGCU Invite

FT. MYERS, Florida - The Iowa State tennis team kicked off the 2015 season Saturday at the Florida Gulf Coast Invitational. The Cyclones competed in singles and doubles matches against teams from Florida Gulf Coast, Northwestern State, Miami (OH), Southern Mississippi, and Arkansas State.
Iowa State kicked off the day with wins from two doubles pairs. Veteran pair senior Meghan Cassens and junior Ana Gasparovic earned wins over pairs from Arkansas State and Northwestern State. They will play in the consolation finals tomorrow after a loss to Ladutska and Larina of Northwestern State, 6-3.
Senior Caroline Andersen and junior Alejandra Galvis will play in the finals of their doubles brackets after three impressive wins. The duo took down Kerr and Vlaskina from Northwestern State, 6-0, before earning 6-4 wins over Badileanu and Costea of Miami (OH) and Gurgenyan and Roca of Southern Mississippi.
Five Cyclones earned singles wins in the first round of the tournament. Andersen defeated Maria Vlaskina of Northwestern State, 6-0, 6-1. Galvis took down Southern Mississippi's Claudia Castella, 6-1, 6-4, while senior Ksenia Pronina earned a hard-fought win over Miami's Hannah Shteyn, 7-6, 7-5.
Gasparovic and sophomore Samantha Budai both defeated their opponents after playing to three sets in the first round. Gasparovic took down FGCU's Candela Munoz, 6-2, 4-6, 3-0(ret.). Budai also came back after a second-set loss, 7-5, 6-7, 6-2.
The Cyclones will continue tournament play on Sunday, finishing out the doubles brackets and continuing with the second round of singles play.
