IRVING, Texas - Iowa State freshman center
Bryanna Fernstrom earned her third Big 12 Freshman of the Week award, the league announced Monday. Fernstrom has earned the most weekly honors of any Big 12 freshman this season.
Fernstrom averaged 12.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and shot 52.3 percent (11-of-21) from the field as Iowa State went 2-0 on the week with wins over TCU and at No. 8 Texas. The 6-5 center netted a game-high 18 points in just 22 minutes against TCU and also hauled in six rebounds.
Though Fernstrom only tallied six points against the Longhorns, her big plays came late as she made a layup to cut the UT lead to 57-56 with just over 30 seconds remaining. She then grabbed the most important defensive rebound of the game to prevent Texas from attempting another game-winning shot. The rebound sealed the victory and gave the Cyclones their highest-ranked road win in program history.
Iowa State returns to the court on Wednesday as it takes on Kansas at 7 p.m. in Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State currently sits at third in the Big 12 standings.
