AMES, Iowa – A tight and competitive Big 12 women's basketball game came down to the final seconds as Oklahoma State's Brittany Martin hit a jumper with 1.0 seconds left to take down the Iowa State women's basketball team 63-62 Saturday evening at Hilton Coliseum. The loss drops ISU to 14-6 on the season, 5-4 in the Big 12. The Cowgirls are now 13-7 overall, 3-6 in conference competition.
Brynna Fernstrom led the Cyclones with 23 points on 11-of-17 shooting from the field while
Nikki Moody chipped in 17 points and eight assists in defeat.
How It HappenedIt was the
Bryanna Fernstrom show early in the first half as the freshman from Center City, Minn. made the first 13 points for Iowa State and finished the half with 19 of Iowa State's 31 points on 9-of-11 shooting. However the Cowgirls used a 15-of-30 performance and outrebounded the Cyclones by nine, 20-to-11, on their way to a 36-31 halftime lead.
It was a back-and-forth affair in the second half, as the game featured 10 ties and 15 lead changes. After an elongated battle back, the Cyclones got back ahead when Fernstrom put one away as the shot clock expiered to make it 49-47. ISU got its largest lead of the game the next possession as a sharp bounce pass from Moody to
Seanna Johnson put ISU ahead 51-47.
Johnson hit a pair of free throws with a minute remaining to put ISU back ahead 62-61. After the Cowgirls came up empty, it looked like ISU was home free, but Roshunda Johnson stripped Moody to go on the break, but Moody redeemed herself by blocking Johnson's lay-in attempt. It was not to be though as Martin hit a 12-foot jump shot with one second to go to give OSU the decisive lead. ISU tried to bomb a pass down the court for one more shot, but the Cowgirls deflected it away and left Hilton victorious.
Cyclone GameBall Goes to…Brynna Fernstrom. Fernstrom got Iowa State started early with the first 13 points of the ball game. Her first half contributions were crucial to keeping ISU in the game, and her baskets in the second half were timely. For the game, Fernstrom had 23 points on 11-fo-17 shooting from the field, the second-highest output of her young Iowa State career.
