DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The Iowa State tennis team won 11 of its 12 matches on Friday at the Juan Varon Memorial Wildcat Tennis Invitational, hosted by Bethune-Cookman University.
The Cyclones' hot start began in doubles action, led by a win from Samantha Budai and Liza Buss in the gold bracket. The duo defeated Florida Tech's Chloe Chanley and Natasa Vukovic for their sixth consecutive win, improving them to 7-1 this fall.
Annabella Bonadonna and Alejandra Galvis teamed up for an 8-0 sweep of St. Petersburg's Jennifer Camacho and Anna Olsen. Anna Kuuttila and Claudia Toledo moved ISU to 3-0 in doubles action with another 8-0 sweep, this one coming against Warner's Madison Burnett and Amber Najjar.
The strong play continued into the singles bracket with the Cyclones going 6-0 as the first wave of players took the court.
Budai won for the fourth time in five singles matches, sweeping Florida Tech freshman Alahna Reto in straight sets in the top draw. Buss also advanced on the winner's side with a hard-fought, 6-2, 7-5, win against Barry's Emma Onila, a senior who is ranked among the top-1,000 tennis players in the world and finished seventh in Division II last season.
