WATERLOO, Iowa- The Iowa State Tennis team will travel to Cedar Falls on Wednesday to take on Northern Iowa. The Cyclones are currently 2-1 on the spring season, while the Panthers are 6-3.
The Cyclones last competed on February 7 against Utah State in Iowa City, bouncing back with a 5-2 win following a loss to Iowa the day before.
“I thought that [the team] did a great job,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “Utah [State] is a very team, they've beaten some very good teams. We came out and won the doubles and a lot of the matches were very close. I was very content with the level of efforts that we put in and the energy that we had going in.”
Espinosa hopes that the team will bring that same energy against UNI, and as they prepare to take on No. 33 Oklahoma on Sunday in Ames, despite battling some injuries on the team.
“We have a couple of injuries that we'll have to deal with this weekend, so it's going to be interesting to see what I do and how it's going to affect doubles and things like that,” Espinosa said. “We can't take them lightly.”
UNI most recently took on Milwaukee and Upper Iowa in a doubleheader on February 8 in Waterloo, Iowa. The Panthers defeated both teams, with a 4-3 win over Milwaukee and a 6-1 win over Upper Iowa.
The Cyclones also face pressures to perform on the road against an in-state rival.
“It's an in-state rivalry and they're going to have people there,” Espinosa said. “It's always going to be tough to play against a crowd. Every time you play a team that's within your state you just want to do a good job of coming out with lots of energy. Don't let them feel like they have a chance.”
Play is set to begin at 2 p.m. at the Black Hawk Tennis Center in Waterloo, Iowa.
