Cyclone Headlines
- The Iowa State softball team is back in action this weekend at the UTSA Classic in San Antonio, hosted by the University of Texas-San Antonio.
- The Cyclones will take part in three games, starting with a Friday doubleheader against Incarnate Word at 3 p.m. and then the host Roadrunners at 5:30 p.m. ISU will close out the tournament on Saturday morning at 10 a.m. against Southeastern Louisiana.
- Iowa State went 2-2 at last weekend's “Battle at the Beach” hosted by Coastal Carolina. The Cyclones picked up wins over Ole Miss and St. Bonaventure, while falling to the hosts CCU and Ole Miss in the teams' second meeting.
- ISU was led by Brittany Gomez, who hit .500 for the weeend while also recording a home run, 3 RBIs and five stolen bases.
- Gomez, a 2014 NFCA First Team All-Midwest Region selection, is tied atop the Big 12 in hits with 14 and third in the conference with her .483 batting average this season. The junior currently ranks ninth in school history with 155 career hits, only five away from eighth (Julia Lindsey, 2001-04).
- Gomez has also been a star on the basepaths, leading the Big 12 in stolen bases with nine and having not been caught this season. It has taken her eight games this year to get to nine, apart from 17 to get to nine last year and 13 games to get nine when she set her school record of 31 in 2013.
- With a stolen base this weekend, Gomez would become the third player in Iowa State history to record three seasons with at least 10 stolen bases, joining Adi Blackmon (2000, 2001, 2003) and Carleigh Berry (2008, 2009, 2010).
- The offense has been led so far this season by Maddie Reese. A senior, Reese ranks second on the Cyclones with a .375 batting average while recording three home runs and nine RBIs. She has already surpassed most of her work from last season, having recorded a .161 batting average, no home runs and six RBIs last season.
- The Cyclones feature many freshman contributors, as freshmen Nychole Antillon and Kelsey McFarland have started every game, Brianna Weilbacher having started in the circle and Cathlin Bingham, Gabby Voulgaris and Kaila Konz all having earned starts this year.
