AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team will travel to Iowa City this weekend to take on Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series rival Iowa on Friday (6 p.m.), and Utah State on Saturday (1 p.m.). The matches will be played at the Hawkeye Tennis and Recreation Complex.
Last weekend in Ames, the Cyclones played at home for the first time this spring with an impressive 7-0 win over Omaha. The Cyclones put on a show in singles, allowing the Mavs to score no more than once each set.
“We were very, very good in singles,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “I felt like everybody just came out and played to their abilities. They didn't have to do anything special to win, but it was a pretty good showing for singles.”
Espinosa thinks that his team can improve in doubles by being a little faster and getting ahead early, and that the match against Omaha helped the team to prepare for the weekend ahead.
“We want to keep improving in doubles, so to pretty much not lose a point throughout the day was a good day,” Espinosa said. “At the same time, the competition is going to be a little bit more difficult [in Iowa City,] but coming out and pretty much dominating your opponent is a good thing, so hopefully that will give us a little bit of confidence going into the weekend.”
Playing in Iowa City will add some pressure to the Cyclones to perform well in their first away match of the spring season, but Espinosa thinks the team is ready for the excitement of the rivalry match.
“The atmosphere is going to be crazy,” Espinosa said. “They're going to have both men's and women's matches at the same time. So it's going to be loud, but at the same time, that's kind of the environment that [teams] want to play in.”
