AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State tennis team (7-10, 2-3 Big 12) fell 4-2 to No. 38 Texas (6-8, 3-2 Big 12) on Friday at the Ames Racquet and Fitness Center, despite hard-fought matches all around.
“I thought we gave a great effort,” head coach Armando Espinosa said. “We couldn't ride the momentum in doubles, we were up and had chances. The problem is that we go out there and Texas just keeps working hard. They played like they've been there before. I tip my hat to them, very disciplined team.”
Junior Alejandra Galvis snagged her eighth-straight singles victory at the No. 4 position. The 6-4, 6-3 win over Danielle Wagland puts the Colombia native at a 4-1 record in Big 12 play this season. She is also 11-2 in dual match play for singles, losing only to UNI and Oklahoma more than a month ago.
“She just keeps fighting,” Espinosa said. “She's a competitor. She goes out there and competes really hard. I just think she's in a very good spot right now and she knows what her game is and she is very secure in what's working. It's one of those things that her game is on.”
Close doubles matches led to a team point for Texas. Sophomore Sami Budai and senior Ksenia Pronina fell 6-2 at the No. 1 spot to Lina Padegimaite and Breaunna Addison. Neda Koprcina and Pippa Horn clinched the point for the Longhorns at No. 3 doubles over senior Caroline Andersen and junior Alejandra Galvis.
Singles play was competitive, but ultimately losses at No. 1, 3 and 5 decided the match in the Longhorns' favor. At No. 1, Budai was up one set over No.47-ranked Breaunna Addison, but was forced into a third set, falling 4-6, 6-3, 6-0. Neda Koprcina clinched the match with a three-set win over Cassens at No. 3, 6-7(2), 6-2, 6-4, despite a first-round tiebreak win for Cassens.
The Cyclones will rest up before taking on No.4 Baylor on Sunday at home. Play is set to begin at 9 a.m. at Ames Racquet and Fitness Center.
“Come Sunday if we just play with the same effort and intensity that we did today, I think we have a good chance,” Espinosa said.
