Cyclone Headlines
- After nine days without games, the Iowa State softball team takes the field again Wednesday, welcoming in-state foe UNI for a 4 p.m. game at the Cyclone Sports Complex.
- Iowa State was originally scheduled to play Nebraska last Wednesday, but a scheduling re-arrangement saw the game cancelled. Last weekend was ISU's Big 12 bye weekend.
- ISU is coming off a 2-2 weekend at home. Iowa State picked up a pair of wins over South Dakota 11-10 and 6-5 on Saturday. In a Sunday doubleheader against Miami University, ISU fell to the RedHawks 9-4 and 5-3.
- The Cyclone offense was led by Brittany Gomez, who had 10 hits across the weekend to increase her batting average to .448 on the season, which ranks second in the Big 12 and 53rd nationally.
- Gomez now has 47 on the season. She is three hits away from becoming the third player in ISU history to have at least three seasons with 50+ hits, joining Karen Brenner (1987, 1988, 1989) and Kelsey Kidwell (2008, 2009, 2010).
- Three more hits would also move Gomez into a tie for fourth in program history for career hits with Alex Johnson (2007-10) at 191.
- Gomez is ISU's all-time leader in batting average (.394) and stolen bases (74). Gomez ranks second in the Big 12 and 27th nationally in steals, boasting 19 for the year. With a school-record 31 steals as a freshman and 24 as a sophomore, the junior is already the only player in school history with multiple 20+ stolen base seasons.
- In the Cyclones' win over UC-Santa Barbara on Mar. 7, Brittany Gomez put up a historic stat line to lead ISU to victory. Gomez went 5-for-5 with four runs, four RBIs and three stolen bases. Gomez's five hits tied the Iowa State single-game record, previously only reached by Carleigh Berry at Missouri State in 2009.
- Senior shortstop Lexi Slater had a strong fortnight after a slow start to her 2015 season. Across her last eight games, Slater is hitting .500 (14-of-28) while slugging .964 with four home runs and 14 RBIs.
- Maddie Reese's power has been crucial to the Cyclones' efforts so far this season. The senior leads Iowa State with seven home runs and is second on the squad with 18 RBIs on the season, slugging .622 in the process. Last year, Reese had no home runs, six RBIs and slugged .210.
