Cyclone Headlines
- The Iowa State softball team will take on its most challenging tournament of the young 2015 season this weekend as the Cyclones travel to Las Vegas to take part in the Rebel Classic.
- Action starts on Friday with ISU taking on No. 14 California, its first game of 2015 against a ranked opponent, at 11 AM CT/9 AM PT. The game against the Bears is the first of two on Firday, as ISU will take on the hosts UNLV at 3:30 PM/1:30 PM. Saturday sees ISU take on Houston at 8 PM/6 PM and UC-Santa Barbara immediately following. The Cyclones close out the tournament Sunday against Eastern Kentucky at 1:15 PM/11:15 AM.
- The Cyclones went 2-2 last weekend at the San Diego Classic. In a low-scoring quartet of games, ISU defeated North Dakota (3-2) and Cal Poly in 12 innings (4-3), while falling to UC-Davis (1-0) and San Diego State (3-0).
- A winning record this weekend would put Iowa State's first 20-games record among the best in school history. A 5-0 weekend would make this the fourth ISU team to start a season 16-4 or better, while a 4-1 weekend would mark the sixth season starting 15-5 or better. Even a 3-2 weekend would rank as the ninth time ISU has started a season 14-6 or better.
- Brittany Gomez recorded four hits last weekend to move to 163 on her career, the eighth-most in Iowa State history. The junior is within 10 hits of entering the top-five, currently sitting five hits behind Kelsey Kidwell (168, 2007-10), eight away from Karen Brenner (171, 1986-89) and nine behind Erin Woods (172, 1996-99).
- Gomez leads the Cyclones and ranks seventh in the Big 12 with her .407 batting average on the season. She also ranks among the best in the conference in stolen bases with 11, tied for second.
- The Iowa State pitching staff had a strong weekend at the San Diego Classic, recording a 1.13 ERA across the four games. Teams hit just .209 off the pitching staff that gave up only five earned runs on the weekend.
- Katie Johnson leads the pitching staff with a 1.90 ERA in her 10 games. Johnson has four complete games while players are hitting .247 off her.
