Cyclone Notes
- Iowa State gets under way with games against Big 12 opposition this weekend when the Cyclones take on Big 12 leaders are No. 5 Oklahoma in a three game series. Game one against the Sooners is at 6:30 p.m. with a doubleheader on Saturday starting at noon.
- The Cyclones, coming off a 10-day break due to weather cancellations and a Big 12 bye weekend, took down in-state rivals UNI 12-4 in five innings Wednesday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Lexi Slater led the Cyclone effort with a 3-for-4 day, featuring four RBIs. Nychole Antillon wnet 2-for-4 and recorded her first career multi-RBI game with three runs batted in.
- Slater has been hot as of late, seeing her batting average rise from a season-low. 208 after ISU's loss to Houston to .358 after the UNI game. In those 12 games, Slater has hit .548 with four home runs and 23 RBIs with a .905 slugging percentage.
- Brittany Gomez went 2-for-3 against the Panthers, upping her batting average to a Big 12-leading .454, featuring a Big 12-best 49 base hits.
- With 49 hits, Gomez is one hit away from becoming the third player in ISU history to have at least three seasons with 50+ hits, joining Karen Brenner (1987, 1988, 1989) and Kelsey Kidwell (2008, 2009, 2010).
- One more hit would also move Gomez into a tie for fourth in program history for career hits with Alex Johnson (2007-10) at 191.
- Gomez is ISU's all-time leader in batting average (.396) and stolen bases (74). Gomez ranks second in the Big 12 and 27th nationally in steals, boasting 19 for the year. With a school-record 31 steals as a freshman and 24 as a sophomore, the junior is already the only player in school history with multiple 20+ stolen base seasons.
- In the Cyclones' win over UC-Santa Barbara on Mar. 7, Brittany Gomez put up a historic stat line to lead ISU to victory. Gomez went 5-for-5 with four runs, four RBIs and three stolen bases. Gomez's five hits tied the Iowa State single-game record, previously only reached by Carleigh Berry at Missouri State in 2009.
- Maddie Reese's power has been crucial to the Cyclones' efforts so far this season. The senior leads Iowa State with seven home runs and is second on the squad with 19 RBIs on the season, slugging .612 in the process. Last year, Reese had no home runs, six RBIs and slugged .210.
