AMES, Iowa – The No. 37 Iowa State women's golf team earned its school-record-breaking sixth-straight berth to the NCAA Regionals. The Cyclones were selected to play in the NCAA Raleigh Regional, May 7-9 in Raleigh, N.C., as the No. 9 seed. The NCAA Regional participants were announced this evening on Golf Central.
The NCAA Raleigh Regional will take place at the Lonnie Poole Golf Club with North Carolina State University as the host. The top six teams in the four regionals will advance to the NCAA Championships, May 22-27 in Bradenton, Fla.
This marks the 10th time in school history (1993, 1994, 1995, 1996, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015) Iowa State has qualified for an NCAA Regional. The Cyclones made it out of Regionals for the first time in school history a year ago by tying for sixth at the NCAA West Regional.
Iowa State finished 23rd at the 2014 NCAA Championship in its first-ever appearance at the national meet. The Cyclones want to make it back there again.
The Cyclones placed fourth at the Big 12 Championships this past weekend at the Dominion Country Club in San Antonio, Texas.
It marked the sixth season in a row where the Cyclones placed fourth or better at the Big 12 Championship. A trio of Cyclones made the Big 12 All-Tournament team in
Chonlada Chayanun,
Cajsa Persson and
Nattapan Siritrai, who all tied for 10th in the medalist race.
Chayanun is wrapping up one of the greatest careers in the history of Iowa State golf. The senior is on pace to break the single-season school record in stroke average (73.03) and her career scoring mark of 74.74 is No. 1 in school history. Chayanun, who tied for the seventh at the 2014 NCAA Championships, has placed in the top-10 in four of her last five tournaments.
Chayanun (No. 69) is one of two Cyclones ranked in the nation's top-100 according to Golfweek. Freshman
Celia Barquin is ranked No. 87. Barquin, who is tied for the team lead with four top-10 finishes, is on pace to break ISU's rookie scoring record at 73.40.
