AMES, Iowa – Iowa State assistant wrestling coach
Travis Paulson has been selected as the USA Head Cadet Pan American Freestyle Wrestling coach for the second year in a row.
Paulson will be joined by Southeast Polk Head Coach Jason Christenson and Craig Lamont in coaching the Cadet level athletes.
The former Iowa State three-time All-American is fixed to take the squad of 11 grapplers to Guadalajara, Mexico where the Pan Am tournament is set to take place July 1-5. The United States team features the top wrestlers aged 16-17 from all over the country, eight of which finished in the top-six at the 2015 Cadet World Team Trials in Akron, Ohio.
At last year's tournament, Paulson coached team USA to the top of podium, taking first-place at the 2014 Pan American Cadet Championships. Paulson's squad took home seven gold medals and one silver. The seven golds tied for the most since the United States began sending its Cadet level athletes to the event.
Since joining the Iowa State coaching staff five seasons ago, Paulson has been instrumental in developing Iowa State's middle-weight and upper-weight wrestlers into national contenders. Most recently, the Council Bluffs native helped
Kyven Gadson win the 197-pound NCAA title in 2015.
