AMES, Iowa – Iowa State centerfielder
Brittany Gomez was named to her second consecutive National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) DI All-Midwest Region First Team, which was announced Thursday.
Gomez, who earlier this week was named to the All-Big 12 Second Team and Big 12 All-Defensive Team, becomes just the second player in school history to earn multiple All-Region First Team honors. Jenny Condon was the other one, being a three-time honoree from 1988-90.
Gomez, a junior from New Braunfels, Texas, was one of the Big 12's most feared hitters from the lead-off spot. Gomez ranked third in the Big 12 with a .425 batting average, the second-highest in a season in school history. She got that high average with a Big 12-best and school record 79 base hits. Gomez has continued to expand her game at the plate, hitting a career-best five triples, the most by a Cyclone since 2004, and two home runs, including a grand slam in ISU's win over Texas Tech. On the basepaths, Gomez tied her school record for stolen bases in a season with 31. She is ISU's all-time steals leader with 86 stolen bases.
By being named to the All-Region Team, Gomez is now eligible to be named to the NFCA All-America teams, which will be determined within the next two weeks.
