AMES, Iowa – Iowa State tennis head coach Armando Espinosa has announced the addition of four student-athletes for the 2015-16 season.
The Cyclones will add New Mexico graduate transfer Anna Kuuttila (Albuquerque, New Mexico), Annabella Bonadonna (Caracas, Venezuela), Elizaveta Buss (Togliatti, Russia) and Maria Regina Espindola (Tabasco, Mexico) to a roster that includes four returnees that were regulars in the 2014-15 lineup.
“We are excited to add a talented group of players to our roster,” Espinosa said. “These players, along with the players that are returning, will provide us with more depth than we've had in recent years. That depth will help us not only in competitions, but in practice as well. All four players are enthusiastic to be Cyclones and will be positive impacts on our program.”
Kuuttila played for New Mexico as a freshman and sophomore, posting a 19-22 record while battling injuries for much of her first two seasons. She went on to earn her degree in chemical engineering while sitting out the last two seasons and will have one season of eligibility as she pursues a PhD in chemical and biological engineering at Iowa State.
Bonadonna comes to Iowa State after a distinguished youth career in Venezuela that saw her win several Venezuelan National Championships in both singles and doubles. Bonadonna rose to No. 1 in her age group in 2008, 2011 and 2013. She represented Venezuela in two South America Games.
Buss arrives at Iowa State as a top-10 18 and under player in Russia. Buss' top world International Tennis Federation ranking was 270th. She was runner up in the Russian Championships.
Espindola is a former No. 1 player in Mexico. She earned the nation's top ranking for the under 16 age group. She was a national champion in under 16 and under 14, and played for the Mexican National team at the World Cup. Espindola also played in Ontario, Canada, earning a No. 20 ranking.
The foursome joins fall signee Claudia Toledo (Davie, Florida) as newcomers to the team.
