The Iowa State softball team played a pair of nine-inning games on Saturday at the All-Iowa Classic in Cedar Falls, Iowa. While there is no official score kept at the tournament, the Cyclones unofficially tied host school UNI in their first game of the day, 7-7, followed by a 14-5 loss to Drake.
It was the top of the order that led the way in the opening game against UNI. Kelsey McFarland, batting in the No. 3 spot, was an offensive catalyst for the Cyclones, reaching base on all five of her at-bats on three hits, a walk and a panther fielding error. The junior also scored three runs for the Cyclones.
Iowa State broke through for three runs in the critical sixth inning after struggling to string together hits for the majority of the game. The frame started with base hits from Kirsten Caudle and Talyn Lewis, as well as a McFarland walk. All three would eventually score, on a sacrifice fly from Rachel Hartman and base hits from Nychole Antillon and Sally Woolpert. ISU led 7-5 through seven innings, but the Panthers tacked on two more scores in the eighth to end the game in a tie.
Drake jumped out to an early lead and never looked back, scoring 11 runs in the first four frames, while the Cyclones were unable to get on the board. The game evened out from there, as the Iowa State would eventually get on the board with three runs in the eighth and two in the ninth in the Bulldog win.
