The Iowa State softball team closed out action at the All-Iowa Classic in Cedar Falls, Iowa on Sunday against Iowa. While there was no official scorer, the Cyclone unofficially fell to the Hawkeyes, 3-0 in what was scheduled as a nine-inning game.
It was a pitching dual early, as the game was scoreless through four innings. Cyclone starter Savannah Sanders and the ISU defense led the way, giving up no runs and just three hits in the opening four frames. However, the Cyclones were unable to come up with timely hits after putting a runner on the third base in the first and second innings.
Kirsten Caudle, who singled to open lead-off the first, advanced to third on a Hawkeye error, followed by a single from Kelsey McFarland. Caudle would be left stranded as Iowa got out of the jam. Freshman Jaiden Johnson collected a triple in the ensuing frame, but the Cyclones were unable to capitalize.
Iowa eventually broke through in the fifth, started by a single from Claire Fritsch, who advanced on an ISU fielding error. Fritsch would eventually score on a passed ball to give Iowa a 1-0 lead. The Hawkeyes would tack on a run in both the seventh and the ninth to win 3-0.
