Ames, Iowa - The Iowa State soccer team (10-6-1, 3-3-1 Big 12) concludes the regular season on the road against the No. 25 Kansas Jayhawks (9-4-4, 4-1-2 Big 12) Friday night at 7 p.m. at Rock Chalk Park in Lawrence, Kan. The Cyclones have already clinched their spot in the Big 12 Championship, but go into the game hoping to improve their seed and also have NCAA Tournament hopes in sight.
Last Time Out
The Cyclones went 2-0 last weekend, including another top-25 win on the road. Friday night, the Cyclones took down No. 24 Baylor in Waco, Texas, in an overtime thriller. In the 103rd minute, Hannah Cade dished out the perfect pass and Klasey Medelberg buried the golden goal. Medelberg continued her performance to Sunday when she scored her second game-winner of the weekend in a 1-0 win at UNI. Medelberg was honored for her weekend performance by being named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week.Â
Scouting the Jayhawks
The Jayhawks are a very skilled, technical team that will match up well with the Cyclones. Kansas holds a 14-5-1 record in the all-time series, and Iowa State has only defeated Kansas one time in Lawrence and it was in 1998. The Jayhawks have been continuously climbing in the Big 12 standings and are now second, trailing only No. 1 West Virginia.Â
Sophomore Grace Hagan leads the balanced Jayhawk attack that has tallied 23 goals this season. Hagan has scored seven of their goals and dished out three assists. Junior Maddie Dobyns is in frame for the Jayhawks. Dobyns is posting a 0.94 goals-against average in conference games on 25 saves.
What to Watch For
Iowa State enters the game sitting comfortably at fifth in the conference standings. Both teams know how important this game can be for making the NCAA Tournament, but they will also be looking ahead at the conference tournament. Look for the Iowa State defense to continue their dominance. Junior goalkeeper Lindsey Hendon has moved into fifth in the country with 10 shutouts and she will want to continue this in the postseason. The Cyclones have been good at finding goals at crucial moments all season, and Medelberg has been enforcing her will of late with a goal in each of the last two games.
