AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State softball team closed out its fall season with a pair of wins over Kirkwood Community College on Saturday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. Sophomore pitcher Savannah Sanders picked up both wins for ISU with a pair of strong outings.
Game One: Iowa State 12, Kirkwood 2
Kirkwood came out of the gates fast, putting its only two runs of the game on the board in the top of the first inning. The Cyclones answered on an RBI single from senior Rachel Hartman to score fellow senior Cathlin Bingham, cutting the Eagle lead to 2-1 in the bottom of the first.
The Cyclones blew things open in the ensuing inning. After a lead-off single from Logan Schaben, Sami Williams stepped to the plate and smacked an RBI double to left center, tying the score. After a base hit from Bingham, sophomore Kirsten Caudle smacked a two-RBI single to right. Later in the frame, Kelsey McFarland would crush a three-run homer to cap the inning and give Iowa State a 7-1 advantage.
Three more runs would come around to score in the third inning, highlighted by an RBI double off the bat of Jaiden Johnson, followed up by yet another RBI single for Hartman. The Cyclones capped off the scoring with two more runs in the fourth on a two-RBI single from Sami Williams to score Nychole Antillon and Schaben.
Sophomore Savannah Sanders got the win for the Cyclones, going four innings while giving up two runs, one of which was unearned, on just one hit. Emma Hylen entered in the top of the fifth and was tremendous in relief, giving up no runs on two hits, to go with three strikeouts.
Game Two: Iowa State 5, Kirkwood 2
The Eagles once again opened the game with a score in the top of the first to take an early 1-0 lead. Iowa State was quick with an answer, as Hartman got the offense going with a single to center in the bottom half of the frame. McFarland then stepped to the plate and blistered an RBI double to center, as Megan Scweitzer, pinch running for Hartman, raced around to tie the game at 1-1.
After a pair of scoreless innings, Kirkwood was able to re-take the lead in the top of the fourth on a solo home run from catcher Maddi Hansen. The bottom of the fifth inning saw the score even up on a crucial two-out RBI single by Caudle. The sophomore came up to bat with Williams and Bingham in scoring position and came through on a chopper to first, which she beat out with Williams racing home to even the score.
Talyn Lewis came up with perhaps the play of the day to give Iowa State its first lead of the game in the bottom of the sixth. The freshman smashed a double to left center, and McFarland raced home from first base for the go-ahead run. The Cyclones tacked on two insurance runs on heads-up base running by Kaila Konz and Schaben, securing the 5-2 victory.
Sanders finished out the complete game victory in another strong performance for the Mt. Juliet, Tennessee native. Sanders went all seven innings, giving up just two runs on seven hits while striking out 10 Eagle batters.
