AMES, Iowa - After recording a 5-1 weekend at home, the Iowa State softball team will start a five-week road swing on Friday at the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational in Houston, Texas.
The Cyclones start the tournament Friday afternoon at 2 p.m. CT against Ball State and will play again later that day at 7 p.m. against the hosts, Houston. Saturday features a match-up with Toledo at 1 p.m., which will mark the first time ISU has faced the Rockets in softball. Iowa State closes out the tournament on Sunday at 9 a.m. with another game against Ball State.
All games will be played at the Cougar Softball Stadium on the University of Houston campus. Houston All-Access will live stream the Iowa State vs. Houston game on Friday evening. Cyclone Headlines
• Iowa State (5-1) overall travels to Houston, Texas this weekend to participate in the Houston Hilton Plaza Invitational. The Cyclones will play four games at the tournament, facing Ball State (2-3) twice, as well as matchups with Toledo (1-2) and the host school, Houston (3-2).
• The Cyclones went 5-1 at the season-opening Cyclone Indoor Invitational, defeating IUPUI (2x), Eastern Illinois (2x) and splitting a pair of games with North Dakota.
• Freshman Savannah Sanders was named the Big 12 Pitcher of the Week following her 3-0 weekend. The Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native had a 0.81 ERA with 23 strikeouts in 17.1 innings of work.
• The Iowa State pitching staff put up a combined ERA of just 1.17 over the weekend. The only game the Cyclones gave up more than one run was in their 8-7 10-inning thriller of Eastern Illinois.
• To make the pitching staff's weekend more impressive, all four Cyclone pitchers that completed at least one inning - Sanders, Mandi Moore, Emma Hylen and Kristine Kimberley - were making their ISU debuts this weekend.
• Junior Cathlin Bingham had a big weekend to open her 2016 campaign. Bingham was 10-for-18 (.556) at the plate, scoring six runs and racking up six RBIs. Bingham also hit a walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th to push ISU past Eastern Illinois, 8-7.
• Kelsey McFarland powered the Iowa State offense early in the tournament. The sophomore started the weekend 7-for-7 at the plate and finished with 5 runs, 6 RBIs and 2 doubles.
• Junior Cathlin Bingham got off to a fast start during the first weekend of the season. Through six games, Bingham is tied for first in the Big 12 in both hits (10) and runs scored (6). Brittany Gomez and Sammie Hildreth have also scored six runs each.
• The Cyclones currently top the Big 12 rankings for both team batting (.335) and team ERA (1.17).
• Three of the top four place-holders on the Iowa State career batting average list are on the2016 Cyclone roster in Brittany Gomez (1st - .394), Rachel Hartman (2nd - .357) and AlyCappaert (4th - .347).
