AMES, Iowa – Iowa State went through a couple of cold shooting periods that derailed its hopes Wednesday night, falling to Kansas State 68-53 inside Hilton Coliseum. Iowa State is now 13-14 on the season and 5-11 in Big 12 play. K-State moves to 18-9 on the season and 8-8 in conference competition.
Kidd Blaskowsky led Iowa State in defeat with 12 points, while Emily Durr posted 10 points in her first career start in place of leading scorer Seanna Johnson, who missed the game for personal reasons. Bridget Carleton chipped in with 11 points.
How it Happened
Without the services of leading scorer Seanna Johnson, the Iowa State offense struggled to find the basket early on, making just one of its first 11 shots. The visiting Wildcats got ahead 10-3, but ISU battled back with a 14-0 run, capped by a 3-pointer from Kidd Blaskowsky to give Iowa State a 17-10 advantage. K-State was able to reel in the Cyclones in the final two minutes of the first quarter, scoring seven in a row with Kayla Goth's 3-pointer tying things back up at 17-17.
The Wildcats were able to sneak back ahead early on in the second quarter, doing well to spread out its options and pull back ahead 23-19. The Iowa State defense did its best to keep ISU in the game, but the Cyclone offense was not as strong, missing 11-straight shots to allow K-State to pull ahead 36-21. Jadda Buckley was finally able to end the K-State run with a bucket, but Breanna Lewis got a bucket with 15 seconds to go in the half to re-establish KSU's 15-point lead at 38-23.
Iowa State went through another big scoring slump to start the third quarter. After Meredith Burkhall made ISU's first shot of the quarter, the Cyclones proceeded to miss their next 10 shots as the K-State advantage ballooned to 49-25. Iowa State could not find the answer, shooting just 4-of-17 for the quarter.
The fourth quarter did not offer much for either team, as Kansas State was able to keep Iowa State back by at least 20 points until the final minute. The Cyclone faithful were pleased to see Blaskowky have a strong night from behind the arc, as she continued to drain 3-pointers late into the contest. Durr also continued to get in the action, growing with confidence in her shooting throughout the entire night.
