AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior softball player Brittany Gomez made history once again on Thursday night when she became the first player in school history to be selected in the National Pro Fastpitch League Draft. Gomez was selected with the No. 28 overall pick in the fifth round by the Pennsylvania Rebellion.
“I'm excited that I've been given this opportunity to see what I can do,” Gomez said. “Today, I'm just thankful that Coach (Gemeinhardt-Cesler) gave me this chance to play four more years and to play at Iowa State. I'm still speechless that it happened.”
The New Braunfels, Texas, native, is currently manning the infield for the Cyclones, but at the next level projects as an outfielder, where she started every game of her first three seasons at ISU. Gomez, who is still just midway through her senior campaign, already has her name stamped all over the school record book. She is the program's leader in hits (274), steals (106) and career batting average (.394).
“I could not be more excited for her,” Gemeinhardt-Cesler said. “She has worked so hard and it's absolutely wonderful to see her dream come true. We can't wait to see her play for the Rebellion. She has been a true leader, as well as an unbelievable player, in our program.”
Gomez is also approaching two other milestones, as she is five base hits and five steals away from joining the Big 12's top five all-time lists in both of those categories. She would be the only player in school history to join those elite ranks.
Gomez and the Cyclones are currently on their Big 12 bye weekend, but will pick up play with a busy week at home, as they face South Dakota in a doubleheader on Tuesday, followed by a matchup with Iowa in the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series finale on Wednesday.
