MINNEAPOLIS - Meaghan Sievers became the third freshman Cyclone gymnast to qualify for the NCAA Gymnastics Championships on Saturday when she tied for first place on vault at the Minneapolis Regional. Her score of 9.900 tied with two other gymnasts to earn her a spot at the April 15 Semifinals in Fort Worth, Texas.
The last Iowa State freshman to qualify for NCAAs as an individual was Erin Dethloff in 2003, and the only other one was Sissy Huey in 1999.
"It's beyond an exciting feeling," Sievers said. "It's one of the best feelings I've had so far. I'm so excited to continue to get better, and continue having these experiences as a team next year."
Sievers competed as an all-around gymnast at the Minneapolis Regional, rotating with Big 12 newcomers Denver. Starting off her meet in the very first rotation, Sievers hit a nice routine on the balance beam to earn herself a 9.575. She had a bye in the second rotation but come back strong in the third with a 9.775 on floor. She hit her stride in the fourth rotation when she hit her 9.900 on vault. She finished the meet off in the final rotation with a strong uneven bars routine, earning herself a 9.775. Sievers earned an all-around score of 39.025.
Haylee Young also competed in the all-around competiton, rotating with the Minneapolis Regional champions, Florida. She started the meet on a bye before competing on the uneven bars in the second rotation. She got her lowest score of the day out first, scoring a 9.625 on the event. Young then moved to balance beam, where she recorded her highest score of the day with a 9.850. In the fifth rotation, she competed on one of her best events, bringing in a score of 9.825 on the floor exercise. She finished off the meet on vault, earning herself a 9.750. Young earned an all-around score of 39.050.
Briana Ledesma competed on both vault and the floor exercise as an Iowa State individual competitor. She was the first Cyclone gymnast to compete at the Minneapolis Regional, hitting a strong vault to earn a 9.750. Ledesma did not compete again until the final rotation, where she earned herself a 9.775 for her floor routine.
Kelsey Paz earned her way to the NCAA Regional as an individual competitor with her high-energy floor routine. Paz competed in the fourth rotation, rotating with Ohio State. She performed a strong routine, pulling out a score of 9.775.
In her first NCAA Regional competition, Sydney Converse qualified on two events as an event specialist. She started her meet during the second rotation, performing a strong beam routine to earn a 9.600. The freshman competed next during rotation five, this time on vault. Converse earned herself a 9.675 on the event with a powerful routine.
Alex Marasco finished her college gymnastics career at the Minneapolis Regional on Saturday. The senior competed as an individual specialist on balance beam. Marasco holds the team season-high score on beam after earning a 9.900 at Hilton Coliseum at the Senior Night against Iowa. Marasco didn't have her best showing at the NCAA Regionals, earning 9.600 on the event.
Hilary Green competed as an individual specialist on the uneven bars. She was the Cyclone's only individual competitor on the event. Green has a history of being one of Iowa State's strongest competitors on bars, earning two 9.900's this season. However, she missed her release, falling from the apparatus and receiving a 9.075 on the routine.
Meaghan Sievers will be moving on to the NCAA Gymnastics Championships, where she will compete on April 15. She will be competing as an individual specialist on vault at Fort Worth, Texas.
