Cyclone Headlines
1. The Iowa State softball team (18-26, 1-8 Big 12) has a pair of mid-week games upcoming, starting Tuesday with a 4 p.m. match-up vs. Drake at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones then turn around and face in-state foe Iowa on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
2. ISU's Wednesday date with the Hawkeyes has some added significance, as it is the final game of the annual Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series. This year's finale will decide which school wins the trophy. The Cyclones can force a tie between the two universities with a victory, which would keep the trophy in Ames for an unprecedented third-consecutive year.
3. Last season, the Cyclones clinched the Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series for Iowa State with a 5-4 victory over Iowa in Iowa City. Aly Cappaert launched a home run in the fifth inning to help lift ISU to victory.
4. This past weekend, the Cyclones went 1-2 in a series at Texas Tech. Iowa State took the opening game of the series, 8-6 for its first Big 12 victory of the season.
5. Kelsey McFarland put an exclamation point on ISU's win over the Red Raiders with a three-run homer that was part of a six-run sixth inning that broke the game open. It was the sophomore's third home run in two games.
6. Senior Aly Cappaert had first-inning home runs in the second and third games at TTU, marking her 9th and 10th homers of the season. She became just the second player in school history to record three seasons with 10+ home runs (Tori Torrescano, 2010-13).
7. Brittany Gomez made history in game two of the USD doubleheader, breaking into the Big 12's top-5 all-time for career hits. The senior now has 280 hits as a Cyclone, 10 away from moving past Lisa Carey (Oklahoma) for the No. 4 spot.
8. The senior has come on strong of late and showed why she was one of the top returning offensive players in the conference. The senior is hitting .500 (18-for-36) over the past 10 games and is now tied for first in the Big 12 in hits at 60. She has played seven fewer games than the co-leader Jessie Scroggins (BU).
9. Freshman Savannah Sanders picked up the first Big 12 victory of her Iowa State career vs. Texas Tech. Sanders went 6.1 innings, giving up six runs on nine hits, to go with a pair of strikeouts. Sanders was also tremendous in relief in Game 2, holding the explosive TTU offense to just one hit over the game's final four innings.
10. Gomez made history once again, becoming the first player in school history to be selected in the National Pro Fastpitch Draft. Gomez was taken with the No. 28 overall pick by the Pennsylvania Rebellion.
