AMES, Iowa – Big 12 action returns to the Cyclone Sports Complex this weekend, as the Iowa State softball team (19-26, 1-8 Big 12) is set to play host to No. 9 Oklahoma (38-7, 9-1 Big 12) in a three-game series. The Cyclones and Sooners are scheduled for a Friday doubleheader with games at 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. The final contest is set for Saturday at 12 p.m.
As with all Iowa State home games, attendance to the Cyclone Sports Complex will be free of charge. Cyclone Headlines
1. The Iowa State softball team (19-26, 1-8 Big 12) returns to Big 12 play this weekend with a three-game series against No. 9 Oklahoma (38-7, 9-1 Big 12). The Cyclones and Sooners are scheduled for a Friday doubleheader (2 & 4 p.m.), with the final game set for Saturday at noon.
2. Last time out, the Cyclones put on an offensive clinic in a 15-12 shootout victory over the Drake Bulldogs. Iowa State's 15 runs and 17 hits were both season-highs. It was the most runs ISU has scored in a game since 3/7/2015 vs.UC Santa Barbara (W, 16-8).
3. The Cyclones were led by the quartet of Cathlin Bingham, Kelsey McFarland, Kirsten Caudle and Sally Woolpert, with three hits each. The mark was a new career-high for Woolpert, while Caudle's three RBIs were a personal best. Aly Cappaert and McFarland also had three RBIs.
4. Sophomore newcomer Kristine Kimberley picked up the first win of her ISU career against Drake. Kimberley put in 5.1 innings of relief work, giving up five runs on eight hits, as the Cyclones stormed past the Bulldogs.
5. This past weekend, the Cyclones went 1-2 in a series at Texas Tech. Iowa State took the opening game of the series, 8-6 for its first Big 12 victory of the season.
6. McFarland put an exclamation point on ISU's win over the Red Raiders with a three-run homer that was part of a six-run sixth inning that broke the game open. It was the sophomore's third home run in two games.
7. Cappaert had first-inning home runs in the second and third games at TTU, marking her 9th and 10th homers of the season. She became just the second player in school history to record three seasons with 10+ home runs (Tori Torrescano, 2010-13).
8. Brittany Gomez made history in game two of the USD doubleheader, breaking into the Big 12's top-5 all-time for career hits. The senior now has 286 hits as a Cyclone, four away from moving past Lisa Carey (Oklahoma) for the No. 4 spot.
9. The senior has come on strong of late and showed why she was one of the top offensive players in the conference. The senior is hitting .513 (20-for-39) over the past 10 games and is now leads the Big 12 in hits with 64. She has played fewer games than anyone else in the top five.
10. Freshman Savannah Sanders picked up the first Big 12 victory of her Iowa State career vs. Texas Tech. Sanders went 6.1 innings, giving up six runs on nine hits, to go with a pair of strikeouts. Sanders was also tremendous in relief in Game 2, holding the explosive TTU offense to just one hit over the game's final four innings.
