Cyclone Headlines
1. The Iowa State softball team (20-32, 1-14 Big 12) is set to close out their regular season schedule with a three-game series against the Kansas Jayhawks (28-20, 5-9 Big 12). The series will start Thursday, May 12 at 5 p.m.
2. The Cyclones will look to rebound from a three-game sweep last weekend at the hands of Texas. The Longhorns entered the series having won 7of their last 8 games, and stayed blistering hot offensively. UT hit 11 home runs during the three-game stint.
3. Despite the disappointing series with Texas, ISU put forth one of its finest performances of the season a week ago, as they defeated Iowa, 5-0, in the annual Cy-Hawk rivalry game.
4. With the win, Iowa State forced a 12-12 Iowa Corn Cy-Hawk Series tie between the two schools, ensuring the Cy-Hawk trophy will remain in Ames for an unprecedented third-consecutive year.
5. Freshman pitcher Savannah Sanders came up huge for the Cyclones in the win over Iowa. The Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native, pitched her ninth complete game of the season, giving up no runs on just four hits in seven innings. Sanders recorded five strikeouts and surrendered just one extra-base hit.
6. Junior Hope Scheffert's play was also a highlight of the victory over Iowa. Scheffert went 2-of-3 at the plate and recorded a career-high two RBIs in the outing.
7. Brittany Gomez now sits atop the Big 12 standings for hits (73) and steals (24) this season. With a 3-for-3 outing in game one vs. Texas, the senior is now tied for No. 3 on the conference's all-time career hits list.
8. The senior also sits at 110 career steals. With one more, she will move into 5th on the Big 12's career stolen bases list, and would become one of just two players in league history to rank among the top-5 in career hits and career steals (Rhea Taylor, Missouri).
9. In the 15-12 win over Drake, The Cyclones were led by the quartet of Cathlin Bingham, Kelsey McFarland, Kirsten Caudle and Sally Woolpert, with three hits each. The mark was a new career-high for Woolpert, while Caudle's three RBIs were a personal best. Cappaert and McFarland also had three RBIs. The 15 runs were a season-high for ISU.
10. Cappaert had first-inning home runs in the second and third games at TTU, marking her 9th and 10th homers of the season. She became just the second player in school history to record three seasons with 10+ home runs (Tori Torrescano, 2010-13). The senior now has 11 dingers to her name on the season, putting her in a tie for fourth in the Big 12.
