AMES, Iowa – Two members of the Iowa State softball team were bestowed with postseason honors from the Big 12, the conference announced Tuesday. Infielder Brittany Gomez was named to the All-Big 12 First Team, while right fielder Kirsten Caudle was named to the Big 12 All-Freshman Team.
Gomez becomes the first player in Iowa State history to be a four-time All-Big 12 honoree, after being named to the All-Big 12 Second Team her first three seasons. She is now the 12th Cyclone in the Big 12 era to earn All-Big 12 First Team honors. Only two other players in program history (Erin Woods and Erica Miller) have ever earned three all-conference awards.
Gomez, a New Braunfels, Texas, native, was among the league's most consistent performers throughout the 2016 campaign. The senior led the Big 12 in base hits with 77 on the season, six more than any other player in the league, while hitting at a .401 clip, tied for the No. 3 batting average in the conference. The speedster also tied for the Big 12 lead in stolen bases with 24 on the season.
Gomez concludes her career not only as Iowa State's all-time leader in base hits, batting average, stolen bases and runs scored, but also entered unchartered waters among career leaders in Big 12 history. She became one of three players in conference history to rank among the league's top five in career hits (3rd - 297) and career steals (T5th – 110).
Caudle, a freshman from San Bernardino, Calif., represented Iowa State on the Big 12 All-Freshman Team. She becomes the second ISU player to receive the distinction since the debut of the All-Freshman team in 2015. Caudle hit .296 on the season while starting 35 games, in right field. In her debut season in the Cardinal & Gold, Caudle collected 34 hits, 10 RBIs and scored 16 runs.
