AMES, Iowa – Iowa State senior Brittany Gomez was named to the National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) DI All-Midwest Region Third Team, which was announced Thursday.
Gomez, who earlier this week was named to the All-Big 12 First Team, is just the second player in program history to garner All-Region honors three times. She had previously earned the honors as an outfielder, but made the move to the infield this season for the Cyclones and was slotted into the shortstop position on the All-Midwest team. Jenny Condon was ISU's other three-time All-Region honoree (1988-90).
The New Braunfels, Texas, native, was among the league's most consistent performers throughout the 2016 campaign. The senior led the Big 12 in base hits with 77 on the season, six more than any other player in the conference and also hit at a .401 clip, tied for the No. 3 batting average in the league. The speedster also tied for the Big 12 lead in stolen bases with 24 on the season.
Gomez concludes her career not only as Iowa State's all-time leader in base hits, batting average, stolen bases and runs scored, but also entered unchartered waters among career leaders in Big 12 history. She became one of three players in conference history to rank among the league's top five in career hits (3rd - 297) and career steals (T5th – 110).
