AMES, Iowa – The Iowa State softball team won its first game of the 2016 fall season, and the first game of Jamie Trachsel's ISU head coaching tenure on Friday at the Cyclone Sports Complex. The Cyclones defeated Iowa Western by a score of 16-5 thanks to an offensive explosion in the second half of the outing.
Iowa State 16, Iowa Western 5
A strong performance from sophomore Savannah Sanders helped the Cyclones hang in what looked to be a defensive battle in the early going, allowing the offense time to find its rhythm. The Mt. Juliet, Tenn., native, allowed just one baserunner early, on a hit batter in the first inning before shutting down the Reiver offensive attack.
Iowa Western would eventually put the first three runs of the day on the board against the ISU bullpen in the fourth frame before Sanders re-entered. She got out of a bases loaded jam to end the visitor's momentum.
The Iowa State offense found a way starting in the bottom of the fourth frame. The Cyclones manufactured two runs after a walk from Rachel Hartman and a HBP from Nychole Antillon put a pair of ISU runners on base to open the inning. Both of those runs would come around to score, cutting the deficit to 3-2 through four.
A five run explosion in the ensuing inning gave Iowa State the lead for good. The frame was highlighted by triples from the senior Hartman and freshman Jaiden Johnson. Johnson's triple came with three outs and the bases loaded, bringing three runs in to score.
The offensive attack continued with seven more runs in the sixth frame, as the Cyclones extended their lead to 14-3. Sanders was eventually relieved by fellow freshman Emma Hylen, who closed out the game, as the Cyclones cruised to the 16-5 win.
