AMES, Iowa- The Iowa State soccer team (6-2, 0-0 Big 12) opens conference play with a two-game road swing beginning on Friday at 7 p.m. when the Cyclones take on Oklahoma State (5-3-2, 0-0-0 Big 12) in Stillwater, Okla. Iowa State rounds out the weekend in Lubbock, Texas, against the No. 25 Texas Tech Red Raiders (7-1-2, 0-0-0 Big 12) on Sunday at 1 p.m.
Last time out
Iowa State is coming off a ten-day break between games before Big 12 play, which comes at a much needed time to get captains Madi Ott and Koree Willer back onto the field from recovering from injuries. The Cyclones topped South Dakota in their most recent contest. Iowa State controlled the majority of the game, and a pair of Cyclones, freshman Anna Frerichs and senior Danielle Moore, were able to score their first career goals in the 2-0 win. Sophomore Emily Steil served up her fifth assist on the season on a free kick that Moore headed in. Steil ranks tied for second in the Big 12 and No. 17 in the country in assists per game (0.62).
Scouting the Cowgirls
Oklahoma State presents a strong offensive attack that is second in the conference behind West Virginia in shots with 176. Senior Courtney Dike leads the Cowgirls' front line. Dike ranks tied for second with six goals and she has also tallied four assists. On the defensive side of the pitch, OSU has struggled. They have allowed the most goals in the league (16) and they have also recorded the most fouls.
What to Watch For
The Cyclones are looking to get off to a good start in conference play after they struggled last season when conference play hit. This game will be a battle of contrasting strengths for both teams. Iowa State's defense has come up big and has kept the Cyclones in every game. The offense hasn't been putting up big numbers, but they have been finding a way to get the job done by scoring in every game except for one. Look for the addition of Koree Willer to spark the offensive threat and get the Cyclones on the board early.
Scouting the Red Raiders
Texas Tech enters conference play with a good start to the 2016 season. The Red Raiders landed at No. 25 in the most recent NSCAA poll and they only sport one loss coming against No. 19 California. Texas Tech plays a strong lineup from top to bottom. Their attack is led by a pair of freshmen, Jade King and Jordie Harr. King leads the conference in shots (48) and has scored three goals. Jordie Harr plays in the attacking midfield position and is the leader in the midfield. Harr also plays with the U.S. U-20 Team.
What to Watch For
Iowa State has already taken down one top-25 team (No. 21 Auburn) so they won't come into Lubbock nervous for this matchup. The Red Raiders are also on the road for their first conference game when they take on Kansas Friday night. The Cyclones will have to play their best soccer for the full 90 minutes, if not longer. The Red Raiders have two ties already this season going the full 110 minutes. Freshmen will make their impact for both teams in this contest. Look for freshman Hannah Cade to facilitate the Cyclones in the midfield and also enhance the Cyclones' offensive threat.
Both games will be streamed live by each team's network. Links to the live streams and live stats can be found on the Iowa State Soccer schedule page on Cyclones.com.
