LAFAYETTE, La. – Iowa State (1-2) notched its first win of 2017 and the first win of the Jamie Trachsel era on Saturday, 6-4, over Southern Miss (1-2) at the 31st Annual Louisiana Classic.
Starting pitcher Brianna Weilbacher picked up the win, putting in four innings of work. The junior struck out eight Golden Eagle batters and gave up just two earned runs (two unearned) on three hits. Sophomore Savannah Sanders entered in relief to pick up the save, going three innings and giving up no runs on no hits with four strikeouts.
Iowa State 6, Southern Miss 4
Iowa State landed the first punch once again in the second game of their back-to-back. Kirsten Caudle opened the game with a single, and later moved over on a Southern Miss error. Kelsey McFarland then connected on an RBI single to right field to score Caudle and give the Cyclones a 1-0 lead.
Southern Miss responded with two runs of their own in the bottom of the second. The Golden Eagles capitalized on a Cyclone error and three walks issued by Weilbacher to bring a pair of runs to the plate.
The ensuing frame was crucial for Iowa State, as the Cyclones found ways to create offense. Following back-to-back walks to open the inning for McFarland and Rachel Hartman, Talyn Lewis notched a sac-fly, bringing McFarland home to tie the game at 2-2. Catcher Kaylee Bosworth then stepped to the plate and crushed a two-run homer to left-center. The shot was Iowa State's first dinger of the season and the third of Bosworth's career. Sami Williams later laced an RBI double, bringing Logan Schaben home and extending the lead to 5-2.
The Golden Eagles answered, plating a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to cut the Cyclone lead to 5-4 before Iowa State got out of the frame.
Williams tallied her second double of the day to get the offense re-ignited in the top of the sixth. Fellow freshman Jaiden Johnson would later draw a walk to put runners on the corners. With two outs, Johnson stole second to bait an errant throw from the Southern Miss catcher, and Williams raced home to extend the lead to 6-4.
Sanders and the defense did the rest of the work, as Iowa State closed out its first victory of the season.
