AMES, Iowa - Iowa State gymnastics' Haylee Young is set to compete at the NCAA Gymnastics Championship in St. Louis on Friday. The junior will be rotating with Oregon State during Semifinal 1, starting at noon. With six rotations in the meet, Young and the Beavers will be rotating starting on floor, moving to vault, a bye, then bars, beam, and finishing on another bye rotation. Young qualified for the competition after securing one of two all-around spots at the NCAA Lincoln Regional with her 39.175 all-around score at the meet.
Young has been a standout gymnast for the Cyclones since she began competing as a freshman. The Des Moines native currently holds the team's season-highs on beam and all-around this season and finished the regular season ranked No. 19 in the country and fifth in the Big 12 with her all-around RQS of 39.370. The gymnast's best meet this came against No. 6 Alabama where she helped the Cyclones to their season-high 196.600 team score by leading Iowa State on every event, recording a career-high on vault, uneven bars and the all-around. Her 39.525 in the all-around marks the best an Iowa State gymnast has recorded since eight-time All-American Janet Anson in 2007.
After coming within tenths of a point of qualifying for the NCAA Championship the past two seasons, Young finally has the opportunity to secure her name in the Iowa State record books by becoming an All-American. In order to achieve the title, Young must place in the top-16 in any given event at the NCAA Semifinals, or in the all-around competition. Young's semifinal will be broadcast live on ESPN2, while Semifinal 2 will be on ESPNU at 7 p.m. There will also be live broadcasts online of each apparatus, which can be found here:
