IOWA CITY, Iowa – Iowa State (16-31, 1-11 Big 12) dropped a 2-1 nail-biter to Iowa (15-24, 7-7 Big Ten) on Tuesday at Bob Pearl Field.
The Cyclones collected three hits in what was a pitcher's dual throughout the evening. Sophomore Emma Hylen threw all six innings for Iowa State, giving up just one earned run (one unearned) on four hits.

The Cyclones grabbed momentum in the top of the second, taking an early 1-0 lead. Junior Kelsey McFarland drew her team-leading 18th walk of the season to lead-off the frame, and was moved over to second on a sacrifice bunt courtesy of Rachel Hartman. The Cyclones then stayed true to their aggressive base running, as McFarland stole third. She was brought in to score on a sac fly by Kaylee Bosworth, to put Iowa State on the board first.
Iowa responded in kind with a sacrifice fly of their own in the bottom of the third. The Hawkeyes were aided by a Cyclone error and a stolen base for Kaitlyn Mullarkey in the inning. Mullarkey was the Iowa runner to score on a fly-out to center field by freshman Devin Cantu.
A defensive battle ensued, with no offense to speak of until Iowa grabbed momentum in the bottom of the sixth. Cantu opened the frame with a single to right, and would then be pinch-run for by Havyn Monteer. Angela Schmiederer followed suit, and doubled down the right field line to put runners on second and third. Later in the inning, Monteer was caught in a run down between third and home, but the Hawkeye freshman was called safe at the plate, putting ISU in a 2-1 hole.
Iowa State refused to go away, with base hits from McFarland and Megan Schweitzer to lead-off the top of the seventh, but the runners were left stranded on second and third when the game ended.
